Valves for Power Generation (Thermal, Gas, Hydro)

Coal-fired thermal power stations, combined cycle (CCGT) plants, and waste heat recovery units require the highest grade of high-temperature, high-pressure valves for main steam, hot reheat, cold reheat, and feedwater service. ASME B16.34 Class 600–2500, alloy steel materials (WC9, P91), IBR certification, and ASME Section I safety valves are standard requirements.

Critical Requirements

IBR certification mandatory for all boiler and steam line valves in India: Form III-C + Form III-E
ASME B16.34 Class 600–2500 pressure-temperature ratings for main steam service
High-temperature alloy steel: A217 WC9 (566°C max), C12A/P91 (649°C max)
PWHT (Post-Weld Heat Treatment) for all Cr-Mo and P91 welds
Stellite (Cobalt alloy) seat and disc facing for erosion and thermal cycling resistance
Full-penetration butt-weld ends (BW) with ASME B16.25 dimensions for power piping
Charpy V-notch impact testing for low-temperature startup conditions
Dimensional inspection per ASME B16.10 face-to-face dimensions

Fluid & Service Challenges

High-temperature steam (538–566°C for WC9, 600–649°C for P91) — creep properties are critical
Steam condensate — carbonic acid (CO₂ in condensate) attacks carbon steel; use SS or alloy steel
High-velocity steam (main steam 300+ m/s in turbine bypass) — erosion of seats; Stellite facing required
Thermal cycling (cold start to full load) — thermal fatigue in welded joints and valve bodies
Stress relaxation in fasteners at elevated temperature — special bolting materials required

Material Selection Guidance

Power plant steam valve material selection by temperature: Up to 260°C (LP steam) — A216 WCB (carbon steel); 260–482°C (IP steam) — A217 WC6 (1.25Cr-0.5Mo); 482–566°C (HP main steam) — A217 WC9 (2.25Cr-1Mo); 566–649°C (ultra-supercritical / P91 plants) — A217 C12A (9Cr-1Mo-V, P91 equivalent). All Cr-Mo and P91 valves require controlled PWHT and PMI. Seat and disc faces: Stellite 6 hard-facing for erosion resistance in high-velocity steam.

Typical Service Points

Main steam isolation (MSIV)
Main steam stop and control valves
Hot and cold reheat isolation
Boiler feed pump discharge (BFW)

Auxiliary steam header isolation

FAQ — Valve Selection for Power Generation (Thermal, Gas, Hydro)

What is IBR and which valves need IBR certification in Indian power plants?
IBR (Indian Boiler Regulations, 1950) is the regulatory framework for boilers and steam vessels under the Indian Boilers Act. All valves on steam lines with pressure above 3.5 kg/cm² (0.35 MPa) and temperature above 99°C require IBR certification. This includes: boiler drum safety valves, main steam stop valves, feed check valves, blowdown valves, and all steam isolation valves in the turbine hall. IBR documents required: Form III-C (chemical and mechanical test certificate for material) and Form III-E (hydrostatic test certificate for the finished valve).
What is the difference between A217 WC9 and P91 (C12A) for power plant valves?
A217 WC9 (2.25Cr-1Mo) is used for high-pressure steam valves up to 566°C (1050°F) and is standard for most subcritical (Main Steam temp ~538°C) and conventional supercritical power plants. ASTM A217 C12A is the cast equivalent of P91 (9Cr-1Mo-V) forged material and is used for ultra-supercritical (USC) plants where main steam temperatures reach 600–620°C. P91/C12A has superior creep strength but requires more stringent PWHT and welding controls.
Can you supply valves for NTPC or BHEL power plant projects?
Yes. Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies high-pressure steam valves meeting NTPC / BHEL specifications with IBR certification. Our valves comply with NTPC standard specifications for piping material classes (typically Class 600–2500 for main steam / HP feedwater) and are available for third-party inspection (TPIA, Bureau Veritas, or client-nominated inspector). We supply to EPC contractors (L&T, BGR, Thermax) and directly to power plant operators for MRO (maintenance, repair) requirements.
