Valves for Refinery & Petrochemical Process

Oil refineries and petrochemical complexes require valves across the widest possible range of operating conditions — from low-pressure condensate to high-pressure hydrogen, from ambient temperature naphtha to 450°C hot oil, and from dry utility gas to H₂S-bearing sour streams. Compliance with ASME B16.34, API 6D, API 600, API 607, NACE MR0175, and IBR (for steam) is mandatory.

Critical Requirements

ASME B16.34 pressure-temperature rating compliance — mandatory for all pressure-containing valve components
API 600 gate valve design standard (bolted bonnet, outside screw and yoke, backseat)
IBR certification for steam lines: Form III-C (material) and Form III-E (test certificate)
API 607 fire-safe certification for all valves handling flammable hydrocarbons
NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 for sour service (H₂S ≥50 ppm or sour conditions)
Fugitive emission compliance: ISO 15848-1 Class B or better for VOC-containing services
Third-party inspection (EIL, TPIA) — standard for IOCL, BPCL, HPCL, Reliance purchases
PMI (Positive Material Identification) testing for all alloy steel and stainless steel components

Fluid & Service Challenges

Crude oil at elevated temperature (300–400°C) — alloy steel WC9 or C12A required
H₂S and mercaptans — NACE MR0175 hardness-controlled materials
Hydrogen service — hydrogen embrittlement risk; special material grades and testing required
Hot naphthas and aromatics — PTFE seats degrade above 230°C; metal seats required
Caustic (NaOH) — stress corrosion cracking risk in CS; SS 316 or nickel alloy required
Amines (DEA, MDEA) — amine SCC in carbon steel welds; PWHT (post-weld heat treatment) required

Material Selection Guidance

Temperature-material selection guide for refinery valves: Below 260°C — A216 WCB (CS); 260–538°C — A217 WC6 (1.25Cr-0.5Mo) or WC9 (2.25Cr-1Mo); 538–650°C — A217 C12A (P91, 9Cr-1Mo-V); Corrosive service (acid, chlorides) — A351 CF8M (SS 316) or CF3M (SS 316L for welding); Sour service (H₂S) — NACE MR0175 WCB or CF8M with hardness ≤22 HRC; High-alloy (HF alkylation, chlorine) — Hastelloy C-276 (A494 CW6MC) or Alloy 20.

FAQ — Valve Selection for Refinery & Petrochemical Process

What valves are required for EIL vendor approval for Indian refineries?
EIL (Engineers India Limited) maintains a vendor approval list for valves used in IOCL, BPCL, HPCL, and other PSU refineries. Approved vendors must meet EIL's SLMV (Specification for Low-Medium Voltage) and SPC (Specification for Piping Components) requirements. Valves must comply with EIL piping specifications including SPC-044 (Gate Valve), SPC-045 (Globe Valve), SPC-046 (Check Valve), and SPC-047 (Ball Valve). Vajra works with EIL-approved valve manufacturers and can supply valves with EIL inspection.
What is IBR certification and when is it required for refinery valves?
IBR (Indian Boiler Regulations) certification is required under the Indian Boilers Act for valves installed on boilers and steam-generating plant, and for all steam pipelines at pressures above 3.5 kg/cm² (0.35 MPa). For refinery steam service, IBR Form III-C (raw material certificate) and Form III-E (test certificate) must be supplied with the valve. Vajra supplies IBR-certified gate, globe, globe-check, and safety relief valves for refinery steam service.
What does fugitive emission compliance (ISO 15848) mean for refinery valves?
ISO 15848 specifies factory acceptance test procedures for measuring and qualifying the fugitive emission performance of industrial valves (i.e., how much fluid leaks past the stem packing or bonnet joint to atmosphere). Class A (tightest), B, and C are defined. Fugitive emission-compliant valves are required for VOC (volatile organic compound) containing streams in refineries to comply with MARPOL, CPCB, and EPA fugitive emission regulations. Typical service: benzene lines (Class A), H₂S service (Class A or B), general HC lines (Class B).
What is PWHT and when is it required for refinery valve welding?
PWHT (Post-Weld Heat Treatment) is a heat treatment applied to welded joints in pressure vessels and piping to relieve residual stresses introduced during welding. PWHT is required per ASME B31.3 / ASME VIII for carbon steel welds above a certain wall thickness (typically >19mm for P-1 materials) and for alloy steels (Cr-Mo, P91). For amine service valves (DEA, MDEA), PWHT is mandatory on all welds to prevent amine stress corrosion cracking regardless of wall thickness.
