Valve Weight Calculator
Estimate valve weight by type, nominal size (NPS), ASME pressure class, and body material. Useful for preliminary piping stress calculations, transport planning, and BOM preparation.
INDICATIVE ONLY — Weight DisclaimerWeights are approximate, based on typical published manufacturer data for flanged end valves. Actual weights vary by manufacturer, design standard, body geometry, and accessories (actuator, gearbox, handwheel). Not for structural or piping stress design use. Always verify against vendor-certified weight data sheets before use in stress analysis, pipe support design, or transport calculations.

- • Weights are for flanged-end (RF) valves per typical published data — butt-weld ends are slightly lighter, socket-weld lighter still.
- • Actuated valves add 15–200% to bare valve weight depending on actuator type and size.
- • Pressure seal bonnet valves (Class 900+) tend to be heavier than bolted bonnet equivalents.
- • Forged valves (Class 800 SW/NPT) for small bore (≤2") are lighter than cast equivalents at the same NPS.
- • Material factor applied: SS 316 ×1.05, Duplex ×1.08, Inconel/Hastelloy ×1.12 vs. WCB baseline (these are typical density adjustments only).
Typical Valve Weights by Size
Valve weight increases rapidly with size and pressure class. At NPS 12" Class 600, a gate valve weighs approximately 630 kg — about half a tonne for a single valve. The table below gives indicative ballpark weights for flanged end carbon steel valves.
| NPS | Ball Class 150 | Gate Class 150 | Butterfly Class 150 | Gate Class 600 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2" | 4.5 kg | 5.5 kg | 3.0 kg | 13 kg |
| 4" | 20 kg | 25 kg | 10 kg | 64 kg |
| 6" | 47 kg | 57 kg | 20 kg | 148 kg |
| 8" | 86 kg | 105 kg | 32 kg | 272 kg |
| 12" | 195 kg | 240 kg | 70 kg | 630 kg |
| 16" | 360 kg | 440 kg | 125 kg | 1,150 kg |

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need valve weights?
Valve weights are needed for piping stress analysis (supporting the weight of valves on pipe supports), for project logistics (lifting and transport planning), and for BOM/procurement documents requiring weight certificates from vendors.
How accurate are these weight estimates?
The estimates are accurate to within ±15–25% for typical off-the-shelf valves. Heavier designs (e.g. pressure seal bonnet, cast stellite trim, nuclear grade) will be heavier. Lighter designs (e.g. top-entry, split body) may be lighter. Always use certified vendor weight data sheets for final piping stress calculations.
Do actuated valves weigh much more?
Yes. A pneumatic actuator on a 6" ball valve typically adds 15–40 kg. A large electric actuator on a 12" gate valve can add 80–200 kg. For actuated valve weights, always get the combined valve + actuator weight from the vendor.
What is the difference between Class 150 and Class 600 weights?
Class 600 valves are typically 2.5–3× heavier than Class 150 at the same NPS, due to thicker body walls and heavier end flanges. At NPS 8", a Class 150 gate valve weighs ~105 kg versus ~272 kg for Class 600.
