Valves for Offshore & Subsea Applications

Offshore and subsea valve applications represent the harshest operating environment in the industry — continuous seawater splash zone exposure, high-pressure/high-temperature (HP/HT) reservoir fluids, sour (H₂S-containing) gas, and the need for ESD (Emergency Shutdown) response times measured in seconds. Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies NORSOK M-630-certified Duplex 2205 and Super Duplex 2507 ball, gate, and butterfly valves for topside topsides; Inconel 625-clad valves for subsea trees; and SIL 2-rated actuated packages for ESD service on FPSOs, jackups, and fixed platforms.

Critical Requirements

NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliance for all sour service valves — H₂S partial pressure thresholds define material selection
NORSOK M-630 material qualification — specific hardness limits and chemical composition requirements beyond NACE
Fire-safe design per ISO 10497 for all production valves — metal-to-metal seat backup required in tropical and North Sea environments
SIL 2 or SIL 3 certification for ESD valves — IEC 61508/61511 failure mode and diagnostics documentation required
Cathodic protection compatibility — valves in splash zone or submerged must be compatible with CP system (sacrificial anodes/ICCP)
DNV or Lloyd's Register third-party type approval for safety-critical offshore valves

Fluid & Service Challenges

Sour crude (H₂S > 0.0003 MPa partial pressure) — sulfide stress cracking (SSC) and hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) risk; NACE MR0175 mandatory
Seawater (Cl⁻ > 19,000 ppm) — crevice corrosion and pitting; Super Duplex 2507 (PREN ≥ 40) minimum for submerged service
High-pressure gas (>300 bar HP/HT wells) — gas permeation through elastomers; metal-to-metal seat or HNBR seats only
Produced water with sand — erosive flow; hardened Stellite 6 trim or ceramic-coated trim
Methanol, corrosion inhibitor, and scale inhibitor chemical injection — SS316L minimum for small-bore injection valves

Material Selection Guidance

Topside process (sour service): Duplex 2205 (A890 Grade 1B) — PREN ≥ 35, suitable for most North Sea and Arabian Gulf fields. Seawater systems: Super Duplex 2507 (A890 Grade 5A) — PREN ≥ 40, no pitting in seawater up to 35°C. Subsea Xmas tree: Inconel 625 weld overlay on low-alloy steel body with 17-4PH precipitation-hardened stem. Chemical injection small-bore: SS316L (A182 F316L) with PTFE or PEEK seats rated for methanol and glycol service.

Typical Service Points

FPSO topsides — production separator inlet/outlet isolation, test separator, gas export ESD (Class 600–1500, Duplex 2205)
Subsea wellhead and Xmas tree — production master valve, swab valve (API 6A, 10,000–15,000 psi, Inconel overlay)
Offshore platform firewater — deluge valve actuation, AFFF foam system (Class 150, SS316 or galvanised CS)
Seawater cooling — HVAC, drilling, and process cooling water (Class 150, rubber-lined butterfly, Super Duplex disc)
Gas injection and lift — high-pressure gas injection valves (Class 900–2500, Duplex or Super Duplex)
Chemical injection skid — methanol, scale inhibitor, corrosion inhibitor (small-bore SS316L needle/ball valves)

FAQ — Valve Selection for Offshore & Subsea Applications

What is NORSOK M-630 and when does it apply?
NORSOK M-630 is the Norwegian standard for Material Data Sheets and Element Data Sheets for Piping Systems, widely used on North Sea offshore installations and increasingly adopted globally by Equinor, Aker BP, and TotalEnergies Norway. It specifies tighter chemical composition limits, hardness caps, and impact testing requirements beyond ASME or API minimum requirements — particularly for duplex stainless steel and carbon steel in sour service. It is mandatory for Equinor-operated platforms and most Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) licensed fields.
What duplex grade should I specify for offshore seawater service?
For seawater service (cooling, ballast, firewater), specify Super Duplex 2507 (UNS S32750, ASTM A890 Grade 5A) with PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) ≥ 40. Standard Duplex 2205 (PREN ≈ 35) is susceptible to crevice corrosion in stagnant seawater above 22°C. For process fluids containing produced water (lower chloride than seawater), Duplex 2205 is usually sufficient. Carbon steel with internal lining is not recommended for offshore seawater — maintenance access is extremely costly offshore.
Do ESD valves on FPSOs require SIL certification?
Yes. Emergency Shutdown (ESD) valves on floating production units are assigned a Safety Integrity Level (SIL) under IEC 61508 / IEC 61511 / API 14C functional safety requirements. Most production isolation ESD valves require SIL 2 (probability of failure on demand 10⁻³ to 10⁻²). High-consequence blowdown and ESDV on wellhead are often SIL 3. SIL certification requires documented failure mode analysis (FMEDA) for the complete valve+actuator+solenoid assembly — Vajra can supply pre-certified SIL 2 packages with PFD calculations.
