Oil & Gas×Actuators

Actuators for Oil & Gas

Actuators are critical to modern oil and gas operations — from automated pneumatic quarter-turn actuators on process plant ball and butterfly valves, to electric actuated gate valves on remote wellhead manifolds, to hydraulic ESD (emergency shut-down) actuators on large-bore transmission pipeline isolation valves. Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies ATEX Zone 1 / Zone 2 certified pneumatic, electric, and electro-hydraulic actuators for upstream, midstream, and downstream oil and gas applications, complete with limit switches, positioners, and solenoid valve packages.

Required Certifications

ATEX II 2G (Zone 1) or II 3G (Zone 2) — explosive atmosphere certification for onshore and offshore oil & gasIECEx — international equivalent of ATEX for export to Middle East, Australia, SE AsiaSIL 2 / SIL 3 per IEC 61508/61511 — safety integrity level for ESD applications (with SIL assessment from TÜV or Exida)NORSOK — Norwegian offshore standard for actuated valve assemblies supplied to North Sea (Equinor, Aker BP)IP67 / IP68 ingress protection — offshore and splash zone environmentsAPI 6A / API 6D — actuator torque requirements referenced in pipeline and wellhead valve standards

Recommended Materials

Aluminium alloy actuator body — lightweight, corrosion-resistant (anodised or powder-coated); standard for pneumatic quarter-turn actuators in most onshore/offshore locations
Stainless steel (SS 316) actuator body — required for severe offshore environments (splash zone, seawater spray), aggressive chemical atmospheres, or where aluminium corrosion is a concern
Spring material: 17-7PH stainless or Inconel spring cartridges for subsea and sour gas environments
Solenoid valves: SS 316 body, ATEX Zone 1, 24V DC coil — standard oil & gas ESD interface

Selection Factors

Fail-safe mode: determine fail-closed (FC — spring closes valve on signal/air loss) vs fail-open (FO — spring opens valve on loss) for each ESD valve; FC is the safe state for most process isolation; FO for depressurisation and bypass valves; fail-last (FL) for some control applications
Operating medium: pneumatic (instrument air or clean dry nitrogen, 4–7 bar) is the most common for process plant automation; hydraulic (150–350 bar HPU) for large-bore ESD and subsea; electric for remote locations without air/hydraulic infrastructure; electro-hydraulic (EHA) for remote ESD where air and hydraulic are both unavailable
Torque/thrust calculation: valve supplier must provide breakaway torque (with safety factor per EN 15714) and running torque; actuator must be sized with a minimum 25% torque margin above valve breakaway; for ESD applications, 50% margin is recommended
Speed of operation: for fire and gas ESD, specify maximum valve close time (e.g., 30 seconds for Class 1500 ESD) — the actuator sizing and spring selection affects close speed; speed control by flow control valve (needle valve on actuator exhaust) to avoid mechanical shock
Accessories package: solenoid valve (3/2 or 5/2, ATEX, 24V DC), limit switches (inductive or mechanical, ATEX Zone 1, IECEx), local control station (LCS) with open/close/stop pushbuttons, positioner for modulating service, junction box for cable termination

Technical FAQs

What is the difference between SIL 2 and SIL 3 for ESD actuated valves?
SIL (Safety Integrity Level) is a measure of reliability of a safety function as defined in IEC 61508 (functional safety of electrical/electronic/programmable safety systems) and IEC 61511 (safety instrumented systems for process industry). For ESD actuated valves: SIL 2 means the probability of failure on demand (PFD) of the complete safety instrumented function (SIF) — which includes the sensor/transmitter, logic solver, and final element (valve + actuator) — must be between 10⁻³ and 10⁻². SIL 3 means PFD between 10⁻⁴ and 10⁻³. The actuated valve assembly (valve body + actuator + solenoid + limit switches) is the final element of the SIF loop. For an actuated valve to be SIL 2 certified, a SIL assessment (FMEDA — failure mode, effects, and diagnostic analysis) must demonstrate that the valve assembly's failure rate is compatible with achieving a SIL 2 PFD budget. For a typical ESD valve: SIL 2 is standard for most process plant fire & gas trips and emergency isolation systems; SIL 3 is required for critical applications such as wellhead wing valve ESD on high-pressure, high-H2S wells, or main flame arrester inlet isolation at LNG terminals. Vajra supplies complete SIL-assessed ESD valve packages with TÜV-reviewed FMEDA reports for SIL 2 and SIL 3 applications.
