About the Pneumatic Rack & Pinion Actuator

The pneumatic rack and pinion actuator is the most widely used device for automating quarter-turn valves - ball valves, butterfly valves, and plug valves - in process plant automation. The design converts linear piston movement (driven by compressed air acting on one or both faces of a piston inside a cylinder) into 90-degree rotary output motion through an interlocking rack-and-pinion gear mechanism. The output shaft is machined to ISO 5211 or DIN 3337 standards, ensuring direct mounting compatibility with virtually all quarter-turn valve top-works.

Two actuator actions are available. In double-acting designs, air pressure drives the piston in both directions: open and close positions are both air-powered, giving maximum torque in both directions. In spring-return (single-acting) designs, air drives the piston in one direction while a bank of compression springs drives the piston in the opposite direction on air failure - providing a defined fail-safe position (fail-open or fail-closed) required in safety and ESD applications.

How to Choose the Right Pneumatic Rack & Pinion Actuator

Size a rack & pinion actuator by matching its output torque (at minimum supply pressure - typically 4 bar) to the valve's Maximum Required Torque (MRT) with a safety factor of 1.25× for double-acting and 1.50× for spring-return. Do not use nominal supply pressure for sizing - field air pressure can drop to 4 bar or less during plant upset. For valves above 24", consider scotch-yoke actuators which provide higher torque at end positions. Always specify the desired fail position (fail-open, fail-closed, or fail-in-last-position) before ordering.
