About the Hydraulic Actuator

The hydraulic actuator uses high-pressure hydraulic fluid (typically 200–350 bar) acting on a piston or cylinder to generate the very high forces or torques required to operate large-bore or high-differential-pressure valves that exceed the capability of pneumatic actuators. Two output configurations are used: scotch-yoke type, which converts linear piston motion to quarter-turn (90°) output rotation for ball valves, butterfly valves, and plug valves; and linear (linear ram) type, which drives the stem directly up and down for gate and globe valves. The high operating pressure of hydraulic systems (200–350 bar versus 4–8 bar for pneumatic) enables extremely high force output from a relatively compact cylinder, making hydraulic actuators the only viable choice for large-bore (above 18") pipeline valves and high-pressure (Class 900 and above) process valves.

For emergency shutdown (ESD) and safety-critical applications, hydraulic spring-return actuators store energy in a large compression spring that provides the fail-safe closing (or opening) force. A hydraulic accumulator holds pressurised fluid to provide several rapid close operations even after the hydraulic power unit (HPU) loses supply pressure. This accumulated energy reserve is essential for subsea and remote pipeline ESD applications where the HPU may be located far from the valve or where loss of hydraulic supply is the triggering event for the ESD action. Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies hydraulic actuators in scotch-yoke and linear configurations with matched hydraulic power units, accumulators, and solenoid-operated hydraulic control valves.

Where It's Used

Key industries and applications for the Hydraulic Actuator

1

Large pipeline ESD and block valves

hydraulic scotch-yoke actuators (spring-return, fail-close) on 16"–48" Class 600–1500 trunnion ball valves and slab gate valves for pipeline emergency shutdown; accumulators provide 3–5 emergency close operations on HPU loss

2

Offshore wellhead and riser ESD

hydraulic linear and scotch-yoke actuators on API 6A wellhead gate valves, downhole safety valves (DHSVs), and riser isolation valves on FPSO and fixed platforms; rated to API 6A ANSI 2000–20,000 WP

3

Large-diameter power plant valves

hydraulic linear actuators on Class 600–900 gate valves (12"–36") for main steam isolation, turbine bypass, and feed water isolation in power stations; high thrust overcomes high differential pressure during start-up

4

Gas compression station block valves

hydraulic scotch-yoke actuators on 12"–24" Class 600 ball and slab gate valves at gas compressor station inlet and outlet isolation; HPU with accumulator provides fail-safe closure on loss of station power

5

Subsea control systems

compact high-pressure hydraulic actuators integrated into subsea tree and manifold gate valves on deepwater oil and gas production systems; control signal from surface via umbilical; rated for 3,000 m water depth

How to Choose the Right Hydraulic Actuator

Specify hydraulic actuators when the required actuator torque or thrust exceeds the practical limit of pneumatic designs (typically above 10,000 Nm for scotch-yoke or 50 kN for linear thrust), when the valve requires fast ESD closure with accumulator-backed energy storage, or for subsea and offshore applications requiring compact size at very high force output. The hydraulic system design must include: HPU sized for required cycle rate, accumulator sized for fail-safe closure energy without HPU supply, and a control valve package (solenoid valves, manual override, pressure gauges). Specify ATEX/Ex-rated HPU for onshore or offshore hazardous area installation.
