About the Electric Motor Actuator

The electric motor actuator uses an electric motor driving through a gearbox to produce the rotary or linear output motion needed to open and close industrial valves. Two output types serve different valve families: quarter-turn electric actuators (0°–90° rotation) for ball valves, butterfly valves, and plug valves; and multi-turn electric actuators (multiple full rotations) for gate valves, globe valves, and other rising-stem valves that require many turns of the handwheel to travel from open to close. The gearbox provides mechanical advantage, converting the motor's high-speed, low-torque output to the low-speed, high-torque motion needed to operate large valves against full differential pressure.

Electric actuators are preferred over pneumatic actuators wherever instrument air is unavailable, where precise intermediate positioning (modulating control to a 4-20 mA signal) is required, where the valve must hold position without continuous energy input (electric actuators hold position at de-energised rest whereas pneumatic spring-return actuators require continuous air pressure to hold), or where the valve cycling frequency is low enough that the slower electric actuation speed is acceptable. ATEX-certified explosion-proof electric actuators are available for hazardous area classification Zones 1 and 2 in oil, gas, and chemical plant environments. Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies electric actuators in torque ranges to 20,000 Nm in on/off and modulating versions with HART/Profibus/FF fieldbus communication options.

Where It's Used

Key industries and applications for the Electric Motor Actuator

1

Remote pipeline block valves

quarter-turn electric actuators on ball and butterfly valves at remote pipeline block valve stations where instrument air is unavailable; 380V 3-phase or 24V DC battery-backed supply; SCADA integration via 4-20mA feedback

2

Modulating process control

multi-turn electric actuators on globe and gate control valves in chemical plants and refineries for precise flow, level, and pressure regulation; 4-20mA input + position feedback (4-20mA or potentiometer) for PID loop integration

3

Water and wastewater treatment automation

quarter-turn and multi-turn IP68-rated electric actuators on SS316 butterfly and gate valves in submerged or flooded valve chambers in WTPs and WWTPs; sealed submersible design operates in permanent water immersion

4

HVAC and building automation

compact 24V DC quarter-turn electric actuators on 2"–12" butterfly valves for chilled and heating water zone control, AHU supply temperature regulation, and fan coil unit modulating control; BACnet or Modbus integration

5

Offshore and hazardous area

ATEX Ex d quarter-turn electric actuators (Zone 1/2) on ball and butterfly valves in platform process modules, wellhead areas, and storage tank manifolds; stainless or GRP enclosure for marine environment

How to Choose the Right Electric Motor Actuator

Select electric actuators over pneumatic when instrument air is unavailable at the valve location, when the valve requires modulating positioning (4-20mA input), or when a low cycling frequency means the faster closure time of pneumatic is not needed. Multi-turn for rising-stem valves (gate, globe); quarter-turn for rotary valves (ball, butterfly, plug). Key sizing inputs: required output torque or thrust at maximum differential pressure, voltage available, required closure time, and whether on/off or modulating control is needed. For hazardous areas, confirm ATEX zone and gas group for correct Ex certification.
