Butterfly Valves for Oil & Gas

Butterfly valves in oil & gas service range from high-performance double-offset designs for gas compressor stations and LNG facilities to triple-offset metal-seated valves for refinery hot oil and high-temperature service. Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies API 609 certified butterfly valves in carbon steel, stainless steel, and duplex grades with fire-safe design, NACE MR0175 compliance, and full actuation packages for upstream, midstream, and downstream oil & gas applications.

Key Applications — Butterfly Valves in Oil & Gas

Gas Pipeline — High Performance Double-Offset

Double-offset (high-performance) butterfly valves for natural gas pipeline isolation, compressor station piping, and gas processing plant block duty. Carbon steel or SS body with SS 316 disc, metal seat for bubble-tight shut-off at Class 150–300. Significantly lower cost and weight than equivalent gate valve at DN200–DN600.

DN100–DN600, Class 150–300, A216 WCB / A351 CF8M, metal seat, API 609, fire-safe

Refinery Hot Oil and Vacuum Service — Triple Offset

Triple-offset butterfly valves for atmospheric and vacuum distillation column side-cut isolation, hot oil (HCO, LCO, VGO) service, and reduced crude/residue lines. Metal-to-metal seat provides zero leakage at 300–600°C. Inconel 625 or Stellite seat overlay for corrosive and high-temperature refinery streams.

DN150–DN600, Class 150–600, WC6 / CF8M body, Stellite seat, API 609, ASME B16.34

Offshore Topsides — Process Block Valves

High-performance butterfly valves for offshore platform process piping (production manifolds, gas compression, and water injection). Lightweight design saves critical topside weight budget. Duplex 2205 for seawater-containing streams. NORSOK M-630 material compliance for North Sea platforms.

DN100–DN400, Class 150–300, A890 Duplex 2205, API 609, NORSOK M-630, fire-safe

LNG Plant — Cryogenic Butterfly Valves

Triple-offset or double-offset butterfly valves for LNG plant block duty on process gas and LNG liquid lines at -162°C. A350 LF2 or SS 316L body, cryogenic-rated metal seats, extended neck for insulation. Faster actuation and lower torque than equivalent gate valve for large-bore LNG isolation.

DN200–DN600, Class 150–300, A350 LF2 / SS 316L, -162°C, metal seat, API 609

Required Certifications

API 609 — Butterfly Valves (primary design standard)API 607 — Fire Testing (all hydrocarbon service)NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 — Sour serviceAPI 598 — Production Pressure TestingEN 10204 3.1 MTCsNORSOK M-630 — Norwegian North Sea offshore materialsSIL certification (where used in safety instrumented systems)

Recommended Materials

A216 WCB (carbon steel body) — standard duty onshore gas and oil pipeline
A351 CF8M (SS 316 cast) — corrosive service and offshore
A890 Grade 4A (Duplex 2205) — offshore topsides and seawater-containing streams
A350 LF2 (low-temp CS) — cryogenic LNG and gas service to -46°C
Stellite / Inconel 625 seat overlay — high-temperature refinery metal seat
PTFE or graphite seat — moderate temperature gas and clean oil service

Selection Factors

Valve type: Double-offset for clean gas and general process; triple-offset for high-temperature, zero-leakage, and corrosive refinery service
Fire-safe: API 607 required for all hydrocarbon service — verify certification, not just claimed compliance
NACE: MR0175 compliance required for sour service; duplex or SS trim for wet H₂S
Pressure class: API 609 Class 150 (standard); Class 300–600 (high-pressure process); higher pressure requires triple-offset
End connections: Wafer or lug for new construction; double-flanged for high torque or large bore installation
Weight saving: Triple-offset butterfly valve is 40–60% lighter than equivalent gate valve at DN300+ — significant for offshore topside applications

Technical FAQs

What is the difference between double-offset and triple-offset butterfly valves?
A double-offset (high-performance) butterfly valve has two offsets: the stem is positioned behind the sealing plane (first offset) and laterally off-centre (second offset). This cam action lifts the disc off the seat on opening, reducing wear. A triple-offset adds a third offset — the seat and disc geometry is conical (not circular) so contact only occurs at the final closing position. Triple-offset achieves metal-to-metal zero leakage and is the choice for high-temperature, high-pressure, or zero-leakage-critical refinery service.
Are butterfly valves suitable for crude oil service?
Double-offset and triple-offset butterfly valves are suitable for crude oil and refined products service when properly specified with API 609 design, API 607 fire-safe testing, and NACE MR0175 compliance for sour crude. For mainline pig-compatible isolation, gate valves or ball valves remain the standard. Butterfly valves are best for process block duty, compressor station piping, and refinery service where pigging is not required and weight or space saving is a priority.
