In refineries, tank farms, LNG terminals, transformer yards, and other high-hazard facilities, a conventional sprinkler system is not fast or comprehensive enough. These areas use deluge systems, in which a single deluge valve holds back the fire water supply to a network of open (uncapped) nozzles. When fire is detected, the deluge valve trips open and water floods the entire protected zone simultaneously - not just the area over one fused sprinkler. The deluge valve is the critical control element that makes this possible.
How a Deluge Valve Works
A deluge valve is a fast-acting, differential- or diaphragm-operated valve that is held closed by system water pressure or air pressure in a priming chamber. The open nozzles downstream mean the piping is normally dry (or air-filled). On a fire signal, the holding pressure is released - hydraulically, pneumatically, or electrically - which unbalances the valve and lets full supply pressure drive water into the distribution piping and out of every nozzle at once. Because it is a latched, trip-to-open device, resetting requires deliberate action after the event.
Deluge Valve Actuation Methods
- Wet pilot (hydraulic) actuation - a pilot line of closed sprinklers or detectors releases water pressure to trip the valve.
- Dry pilot (pneumatic) actuation - a pressurized air pilot line loses pressure when a detector opens, tripping the valve; suited to freezing or remote areas.
- Electric actuation - fire and gas detectors signal a solenoid to release the priming chamber, enabling fast, supervised release and integration with the plant F and G system.
- Manual release - a local manual station allows an operator to trip the system directly.

Materials and Construction
Deluge valves and the associated fire-water valves must remain reliable after years of standby in a corrosive, often salt-laden environment, then perform on demand. Bodies are commonly ductile iron, cast steel, or - for seawater and offshore fire mains - bronze, cupronickel, or coated/lined materials to resist corrosion. Fire water isolation and control around the deluge skid uses resilient-seated butterfly valves, OS and Y gate valves, and swing or dual-plate check valves, frequently to fire-protection approval standards (UL listing, FM approval) in addition to the process specification.
