Supercritical steam power plants operate above the critical point of water (22.1 MPa, 374°C) — typically 24–27 MPa and 565°C. Ultra-supercritical (USC) plants push to 28–30 MPa and 600°C, while advanced ultra-supercritical (A-USC) research targets 35 MPa and 700°C. At these conditions, standard WC9 (2.25Cr-1Mo) alloy reaches its creep limit — the P91 and P92 martensitic Cr-Mo-V steels were specifically developed for these applications.
P91 and P92 — Why Modified 9Cr-1Mo?
P91 (9Cr-1Mo-V-Nb, ASTM A182 F91 forged / A217 C12A cast) was developed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory and approved for ASME Boiler Code use in 1984. Its modified chemistry (vanadium and niobium additions) creates a fine martensitic microstructure with nano-scale carbide and nitride precipitates that pin dislocations at grain boundaries, resisting creep up to 650°C. P92 (9Cr-2W-Mo-V-Nb, A182 F92) adds tungsten substitution for further improved creep strength.
Key Valve Applications in SC/USC Plants
- Main steam stop valves (MSSV) — P91 forged body, pressure-seal bonnet, Class 2500–4500, 600°C, IBR certified
- HP and IP turbine throttle/control valves — P91 or P92, Class 2500, IBR/TÜV certified
- HP turbine bypass valves — rapid-opening, high-capacity; P91 body with special actuator
- Boiler feed pump recirculation — WC9 or P91 globe valves (Class 2500, hot feed water 290°C, 28 MPa)
- Main steam isolation valves (MSIV) — pressure-seal gate valves, P91, Class 1500–2500
- Extraction steam — WC9 or P91 gate valves on HP heater extraction lines
Pressure-Seal Bonnet Design
Above Class 900, ASME B16.34 permits both bolted and pressure-seal bonnets. Pressure-seal bonnets are preferred for Class 1500 and 2500 high-temperature steam service because: the bonnet gasket load INCREASES as internal pressure increases (self-energising); no hot bolting or periodic re-torquing is required; the bonnet ring geometry provides an inherent positive seal at high temperatures. The pressure-seal bonnet ring is usually graphite (expanded graphite) for steam service at 540–620°C.
PWHT — Post-Weld Heat Treatment
P91 is notoriously sensitive to improper PWHT. The required PWHT for P91 welds is 730–760°C for 2+ hours — this must be done precisely. Under-heating (< 730°C) leaves untempered martensite which can crack under thermal cycling. Over-heating (> 760°C) causes over-tempering and loss of creep strength. All P91 valves supplied by Vajra come with mill-certified A182 F91 material and complete PWHT records for any factory welds.
