SIL (Safety Integrity Level)
A measurement of the performance required for a safety instrumented function (SIF), defined by IEC 61508/61511. SIL 1 through SIL 4 (highest). ESD valves and final elements in safety loops must achieve the required SIL level through design and proof testing. SIL certificates issued by TUV, Exida.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a SIL (Safety Integrity Level)?
A measurement of the performance required for a safety instrumented function (SIF), defined by IEC 61508/61511. SIL 1 through SIL 4 (highest). ESD valves and final elements in safety loops must achieve the required SIL level through design and proof testing. SIL certificates issued by TUV, Exida.
What standards apply to SIL (Safety Integrity Level)?
Safety system valves and components are governed by IEC 61508 (functional safety of electrical/electronic/programmable systems), IEC 61511 (functional safety for the process industry), and API standards as applicable (API 607 for fire testing, API 6D for pipeline isolation). SIL-certified valves require a systematic capability (SC) assessment and SFF (Safe Failure Fraction) documentation from an accredited certification body (TÜV, Exida).
How does SIL (Safety Integrity Level) interface with the Safety Instrumented System (SIS)?
Safety valve components in a SIS must be specified with: (1) required SIL level (SIL 1–3 for process industry), (2) diagnostic coverage (DC), (3) proof test interval and procedure, (4) mean time to dangerous failure (MTTFd), and (5) systematic capability (SC) per IEC 61508. Actuators, solenoids, and positioners are included in the SIL assessment as the final element. Vajra Industrial Solutions can provide SIL-documented valve assemblies with the required functional safety data.
