Why must fire protection valves be FM or UL listed?
FM Global and UL (Underwriters Laboratories) are independent testing organisations that verify that fire protection equipment performs as specified under fire and flow conditions. What is the difference between an OS&Y valve and a post-indicator valve (PIV)?
Both are tamper-indicating valves used as fire system control valves. OS&Y (Outside Screw and Yoke) gate valves show valve position by the exposure of the threaded stem — when the stem is visible (screwed out), the valve is open. They are used indoors (inside riser closets, valve rooms). Post-Indicator Valves (PIV) are used outdoors — a cast iron post extends from the buried valve with a window showing 'OPEN' or 'SHUT'.
