About the Spring Loaded Safety Valve
The spring-loaded safety valve is a direct-acting pressure relief device that automatically opens at a pre-set inlet pressure to discharge excess pressure from a vessel, pipe, or equipment, protecting it from overpressure damage. The spring force on the disc establishes the set pressure: when system pressure equals or exceeds the set point, the inlet pressure force on the disc overrides the spring load, the disc lifts off the seat, and fluid is discharged through the outlet until system pressure drops below the re-seat pressure (typically 90–95% of set pressure).
Two main spring-loaded designs are available: conventional (open bonnet) for non-toxic, non-hazardous services where the bonnet space is vented to atmosphere; and balanced bellows (closed bonnet) for toxic, corrosive, or back-pressure-sensitive applications where a metallic bellows isolates the spring from the process fluid and back pressure does not affect the set pressure.
All Vajra Industrial Solutions safety and relief valves are sized to API 520 Part I (sizing) and Part II (installation) and are designed to API 526 dimensions and flange ratings. Inlet sizes from 1/2" to 6" (D through T orifice designations) and outlet sizes from 1" to 8" are available in body materials including Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel 316, Monel, Hastelloy, and Inconel. Set pressures are confirmed by testing on a certified test bench with documentation provided.
Where It's Used
Key industries and applications for the Spring Loaded Safety Valve
Pressure vessels and heat exchangers
API 526 safety relief valves protecting ASME Div. 1/Div. 2 pressure vessels against fire case and blocked outlet overpressure scenarios; orifice sized to API 520 Part I for required relieving capacity
Boiler and steam systems
safety valves set to MAWP on steam boilers, steam drums, superheaters, and reheaters; conforming to ASME Section I (power boilers) or ASME Section VIII (unfired vessels)
Refineries and gas processing
conventional and balanced bellows safety relief valves on distillation column overheads, compressor suction scrubbers, amine absorbers, and LPG storage bullets
Pharmaceutical and food processing
SS316L or Hastelloy trim safety valves with polished internals for SIP (steam-in-place) sterilisation vessels, bioreactors, and buffer/media preparation tanks
Compressed air and gas systems
spring-loaded air relief valves on air receivers, compressor aftercoolers, and instrument air headers; sized for fire case relief per NFPA 30 or API 2000
How to Choose the Right Spring Loaded Safety Valve
Safety valve selection requires five inputs: (1) set pressure = MAWP of protected equipment; (2) relieving temperature; (3) required relieving capacity in kg/h or SCFM; (4) fluid type - gas, vapour, or liquid (API 520 has separate sizing equations for each); (5) back pressure at the outlet - if >10% of set pressure, use balanced bellows design. Specify both inlet and outlet flange ratings to API 526 Table 1. Never upsize an orifice without recalculating capacity - a larger valve may chatter.
