Azerbaijan Oil & Gas — Overview
Azerbaijan produces approximately 650,000 barrels per day of crude oil and 30 billion cubic metres of gas annually. The Caspian Sea shelf hosts the country's most significant hydrocarbon assets. The Azerbaijan International Operating Company (AIOC) — led by BP, with partners Equinor, TotalEnergies, SOCAR, ExxonMobil, Itochu, and INPEX — operates the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli (ACG) deepwater production complex, the source of approximately 75% of Azerbaijan's oil output. SOCAR (State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic) is the national oil company and a major industrial buyer of valves for upstream, midstream, and refining operations.
Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli (ACG) Complex
The ACG complex comprises eight fixed offshore platforms and one floating storage and offloading (FSO) unit in the Caspian Sea, approximately 100 km east of Baku. ACG has produced over 4 billion barrels of oil since first production in 1997. Ongoing Phase 3 expansion (Azeri Central East, planned 100,000 bpd additional plateau) drives ongoing valve procurement. BP as operator specifies NORSOK M-630 MDS (Material Data Sheets) for offshore topsides valves, alongside API 6D for pipeline isolation valves. ESD (emergency shut-down) ball valves with pneumatic actuators and solenoid-operated pilot valves are critical safety items specified to IEC 61508/61511 SIL 2.
BTC Pipeline — Block Valve Requirements
The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) crude oil pipeline, operated by BP, carries Caspian oil 1,768 km from Sangachal Terminal near Baku through Georgia to Ceyhan export terminal in Turkey, with a capacity of 1.2 million bpd. The pipeline uses mainline block valves (MLBV) spaced at approximately 30–50 km intervals per API 6D requirements, plus isolation valves at pump stations and scraper launchers/receivers. MLBV specifications: API 6D, Class 600 or 900, full-bore trunnion-mounted ball valves, sizes DN600–DN1000 (24″–40″), with pneumatic actuators, position indicators, and solenoid valve panels. For shorter pipeline tie-in and manifold work, DN50–DN300 Class 600 trunnion ball valves in A216 WCB body are standard.
Shah Deniz Gas Field
Shah Deniz is one of the world's largest gas condensate fields, located in the South Caspian Sea. Operated by BP (operator), with partners Equinor, LUKOIL, NICO, TotalEnergies, SGC (SOCAR), and TPAO. Shah Deniz Stage 2 has a design plateau of 16 billion cubic metres per year of gas. The South Caucasus Pipeline (SCP) carries Shah Deniz gas 692 km to the Georgian-Turkish border, where it connects to the Trans-Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP) and Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), delivering gas to Turkey and Southern Europe. Gas export pipeline specifications closely mirror BTC: API 6D block valves, Class 600–900, full-bore, NACE MR0175 for sour gas zones, pneumatic ESD actuation.

NORSOK Requirements for Caspian Offshore
BP specifies NORSOK M-630 Material Data Sheets for ACG offshore valve packages. Key requirements include: carbon steel WCB limited to Class 600 maximum, SS 316 (CF8M) for corrosive process and seawater service, duplex SS (F51) for chloride-bearing produced water injection and high-chloride seawater, Charpy impact testing at −46°C for all pressure-containing parts, and weld repair procedures qualified per ASME IX. NORSOK Z-015 covers installation and commissioning testing requirements. Vendors must hold an approved vendor list (AVL) position or provide equivalent type test documentation.
Shipping to Baku — Logistics
Baku is a landlocked Caspian port. Sea freight from India cannot reach Baku directly — goods must be shipped to Georgian Black Sea ports (Poti or Batumi) or Turkish ports (Trabzon, Istanbul), then transited overland or via Caspian ferry from Aktau (Kazakhstan) or Alat (Baku's new port). Most practical routing: air freight to Baku Heydar Aliyev International Airport for urgent items; sea freight + road transit from Poti (Georgia) for bulk valve orders — typically 22–30 days. Alternatively: container shipping to Bandar Abbas (Iran) then road through Iran to Astara border crossing — subject to sanctions compliance review. Standard documentation required: EN 10204 3.1 Material Test Certificates, API 6D certification, NACE MR0175 compliance certificate, Azerbaijan customs import declaration (Form GD2), EUR.1 or Certificate of Origin (Form A) for preferential duty rates where India-Azerbaijan FTA applies.
