Industrial Valve Supplier to Finland — Neste Porvoo, Stora Enso & Mining

Finland's industrial valve market is distinctive for its concentration in two world-class sectors: renewable fuels (Neste Corporation's Porvoo Refinery — the world's largest single-site HVO and SAF refinery) and the global pulp and paper industry (Stora Enso, UPM-Kymmene, METSÄ Group). Both sectors require highly specialised valve solutions that differ significantly from conventional oil & gas service.

Neste Porvoo — HVO and SAF Valve Requirements

Neste's Porvoo Refinery processes conventional crude (12 MT/yr) alongside 2.6 MTPA of renewable feedstocks: used cooking oil (UCO), animal fats (tallow, fish oil), and palm oil fatty acid distillate (PFAD). The NEXBTL hydrotreating process for HVO production introduces unique valve challenges: UCO and tallow feeds are viscous, waxy, and prone to solidification below 40–50°C — requiring heat-traced ball valves with steam jackets, viscosity-resistant trim, and jacketed flanges. SS 316L is the standard wetted material for vegetable oil and UCO service. Safety relief valves must be sized for the lower molecular weight of HVO (not conventional naphtha) using API 520 calculation.

Pulp & Paper Valve Requirements — Stora Enso, UPM, METSÄ

Finland's pulp mills (Kraft/sulphate process) require valves for cooking liquor (white liquor, black liquor), bleach plant (ClO₂, H₂O₂, chlorine-free TCF bleaching), and recovery boiler service. Key requirements: SS 316L or Duplex 2205 butterfly valves with EPDM seats for black liquor (pH 12–13, up to 170°C); Hastelloy C-276 or titanium for chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) bleaching stage; knife gate valves for pulp stock isolation; and ASME B16.34 Class 300–600 gate valves for high-pressure digester service.

Boliden Harjavalta — Copper Smelter Valve Service

Boliden's Harjavalta copper smelter (170,000 t/yr Cu, Finland's only copper smelter) requires acid-resistant valves for sulfuric acid recovery (H₂SO₄ at 98% concentration from SO₂ off-gas), Hastelloy or Alloy 20 body valves for oleum circuits, and PTFE-lined butterfly valves for dilute acid handling. CS (carbon steel) is suitable only for concentrated (>93%) H₂SO₄ at ambient temperature.
