Zambia is Africa's second-largest copper producer and home to one of the world's most concentrated mining clusters — the Copperbelt Province. Combined copper output from the Copperbelt (Kansanshi, Mopani, KCM, Sentinel, Lumwana) exceeds 800,000 tonnes per year, requiring continuous supply of specialised mining and chemical process valves.
Copper Mining Process — Key Valve Applications
- Flotation circuits: Knife gate valves (MSS SP-135, SS 316L or rubber-lined ductile iron) for copper concentrate slurry isolation. Replaceable elastomer seats for high-abrasion service.
- SX-EW (Solvent Extraction–Electrowinning): PTFE-lined butterfly and ball valves for sulfuric acid raffinate (0.5–1.5% H₂SO₄) and organic solvent (kerosene-based) service.
- Leach pad and heap leach: Poly-lined or HDPE-bodied butterfly valves for acid drainage (pH 0.5–2.0) from oxide ore heap leach pads.
- Tailings: High-pressure rubber-sleeved pinch valves or RPTFE-lined ball valves for tailings slurry transport to tailings storage facilities.
- Mine dewatering: Large-bore (DN200–DN600) ASME 150 butterfly valves with stainless disc and EPDM seat for raw mine drainage water pumping.
- Reagent dosing: SS 316L needle valves and diaphragm valves for lime, flocculant, and flotation reagent dosing systems.
ZESCO Power — Kariba, Kafue Gorge & Hydroelectric Valves
ZESCO's Kariba North Bank (720 MW) and Kafue Gorge Lower (750 MW, commissioned 2022) hydroelectric stations require large-bore butterfly valves (DN800–DN2400) for penstock isolation, turbine inlet butterfly valves (PN 25/40), and spherical (ball) valves for turbine bypass. All power station valve materials must comply with EN 1074 / ISO 13789 for hydro service and Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) import requirements.
Shipping to Zambia from India
The most efficient route from Vajra's Vadodara warehouse to Zambia's Copperbelt is sea freight from Mundra/JNPT to Durban (South Africa, approximately 14–18 days) then road freight to Lusaka or Kitwe (1,400–1,600 km, approximately 2–3 days). Alternatively, sea freight to Dar es Salaam (Tanzania, approximately 10–14 days) then road via Tanzania–Zambia corridor (approx. 1,800 km, 3–4 days). Air freight to Lusaka (LUN) via Nairobi or Johannesburg is available for urgent orders.
