Power Generation (Thermal, Gas, Hydro)
Application Specification

Safety & Relief Valves for Power Generation (Thermal, Gas, Hydro)

Gate, globe, check, and safety valves for steam and condensate service in thermal power stations - ASME Class 600–2500, A217 WC9 and C12A (P91) materials, IBR certified.

Which safety & relief valves are used for power generation (thermal, gas, hydro)?

Coal-fired thermal power stations, combined cycle (CCGT) plants, and waste heat recovery units require the highest grade of high-temperature, high-pressure valves for main steam, hot reheat, cold reheat, and feedwater service. ASME B16.34 Class 600–2500, alloy steel materials (WC9, P91), IBR certification, and ASME Section I safety valves are standard requirements.

Safety Relief Valve (IBR / ASME Sec. I)

Boiler drum and superheater outlet safety valves - mandatory IBR certification for Indian power plants

MaterialsA216 WCB (LP steam), A217 WC9 (HP steam), SS 316 for corrosive steam
Pressure ClassPer rated pressure
StandardsASME Section I, API 526, IBR Schedule IV

Critical Requirements

  • IBR certification mandatory for all boiler and steam line valves in India: Form III-C + Form III-E
  • ASME B16.34 Class 600–2500 pressure-temperature ratings for main steam service
  • High-temperature alloy steel: A217 WC9 (566°C max), C12A/P91 (649°C max)
  • PWHT (Post-Weld Heat Treatment) for all Cr-Mo and P91 welds
  • Stellite (Cobalt alloy) seat and disc facing for erosion and thermal cycling resistance
  • Full-penetration butt-weld ends (BW) with ASME B16.25 dimensions for power piping

Service Challenges

  • High-temperature steam (538–566°C for WC9, 600–649°C for P91) - creep properties are critical
  • Steam condensate - carbonic acid (CO₂ in condensate) attacks carbon steel; use SS or alloy steel
  • High-velocity steam (main steam 300+ m/s in turbine bypass) - erosion of seats; Stellite facing required
  • Thermal cycling (cold start to full load) - thermal fatigue in welded joints and valve bodies
  • Stress relaxation in fasteners at elevated temperature - special bolting materials required
