What is ASME B16.34?

ASME B16.34 (Valves - Flanged, Threaded, and Welding End) is an industrial valve standard issued by American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Covers all valve types (gate, globe, ball, check, butterfly, plug) with flanged, threaded, or weld-end connections.

Overview - ASME B16.34

ASME B16.34 is the foundational pressure-temperature rating standard for industrial valves. It defines the maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP) for valves at any given temperature, based on valve pressure class (150 to 4500) and body material group. Almost every industrial valve purchased globally references ASME B16.34 - it is the starting point for pressure-temperature compliance of any process valve.

Scope

Covers all valve types (gate, globe, ball, check, butterfly, plug) with flanged, threaded, or weld-end connections. Pressure classes 150 to 4500. Material Groups 1.1 through 3.4. Applies to valves with ASME, DIN, JIS, and other flange standards when rated to B16.34 pressure-temperature tables.

Vajra Industrial Solutions manufactures and supplies valves engineered to comply with ASME B16.34, each delivered with ASME B16.34 conformance statement on valve data sheet and Material Test Reports (MTRs) for pressure-containing parts as standard.

Key Requirements - ASME B16.34

01.

Minimum wall thickness of body and bonnet based on pressure class and material group

02.

Pressure-temperature (P-T) rating tables: every combination of class and material has a defined MAWP at each temperature

03.

End-to-end dimensional requirements for flanged, threaded, and weld-end valves

04.

Weld-end bevel dimensions per ASME B16.25

05.

Material compliance: each material assigned to a Group (1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.13, 2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 3.2, etc.) with separate P-T tables

06.

Examination requirements: mandatory hydrostatic and leakage testing per B16.34 Table 5

07.

Marking requirements: stamping with class, material, pressure, and body markings

Testing Requirements - ASME B16.34

Shell/body hydrostatic test: 1.5× rated pressure at 20°C

Seat/closure test: 1.1× rated pressure

Backseat test (where applicable)

Shell test duration proportional to NPS

Documentation Required for ASME B16.34 Compliance

ASME B16.34 conformance statement on valve data sheet

Material Test Reports (MTRs) for pressure-containing parts

Hydrostatic test certificate

Pressure-temperature rating certificate or data sheet referencing B16.34 tables
