High-Altitude Considerations for Mining Valves
Most South American copper and gold mines operate at 3,000–5,000 metres above sea level. At high altitude: atmospheric pressure is 30-50% lower than sea level (0.55–0.70 bar absolute at 4,000m vs 1.013 bar at sea level). This affects pneumatic actuator sizing — actuators specified for 6 bar supply at sea level must be re-sized for 6 bar supply pressure where the effective pressure differential is higher relative to atmospheric. Electric actuators avoid this issue entirely and are preferred at high altitude where instrument air compressors may also be undersized. Spring-return actuators for ESD must be rated for the reduced atmospheric back pressure.
