Vietnam is Southeast Asia's third-largest economy and one of the most dynamic manufacturing and industrial growth markets. The hydrocarbon sector is anchored by Petrovietnam (PVN - Vietnam Oil and Gas Group) with upstream operations in the South China Sea (Bach Ho, Su Tu Den, Lan Tay fields), two operating refineries (Binh Son 148,000 bpd and Nghi Son 200,000 bpd), and an expanding LNG import infrastructure as Vietnam seeks to diversify from coal and domestic gas for power generation.
Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Company (BSR)
Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Company operates the Dung Quat refinery (148,000 bpd capacity) in Quang Ngai Province - the first and oldest refinery in Vietnam, originally designed to process Bach Ho (White Tiger) sweet crude but now increasingly processing imported sour crudes. BSR is undergoing an expansion project (Dung Quat 2) to increase capacity to 192,000 bpd and add a petrochemical complex. Valve requirements: API 6D ball valves and gate valves for crude oil and product pipelines; ASME B16.34 Class 150-600 process valves for CDU, VDU, and secondary processing units; NACE MR0175 for imported sour crude processing in new expanded units; fire-safe API 607 certification.
Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical LLC (NSRP)
Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical LLC (NSRP) is a joint venture (PVN 25.1%, Kuwait Petroleum International 35.1%, Idemitsu Kosan 35.1%, Mitsui Chemicals 4.7%) operating Vietnam's largest and newest refinery at 200,000 bpd in Thanh Hoa Province. NSRP also includes a polypropylene plant, para-xylene complex, and benzene extraction unit. The refinery was commissioned in 2018 and processes Kuwait Export Crude. Valve specifications follow international standards (API, ASME) with Japanese engineering standards (JIS) for some process units sourced from Japanese EPC contractors Chiyoda and JGC.
PVGAS - LNG Import Infrastructure
PVGAS (PVN Gas subsidiary) is developing Vietnam's first LNG import terminals to meet the country's growing gas demand for power generation as domestic gas reserves decline. Son My LNG (1.5 MTPA Phase 1, 6 MTPA final capacity) in Binh Thuan Province is in development, along with Hai Linh LNG and several other proposed import terminals. LNG terminal valve requirements: cryogenic ball and butterfly valves with BS 6364 extended bonnets for LNG service at -162°C; API 6D full-bore pipeline ball valves; NACE MR0175 for systems with potential H2S contamination from associated gas.
Import Logistics to Vietnam
Shipping valves to Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh City (Cat Lai Port) serves southern Vietnam and the Binh Son/Dung Quat region (coastal shipping or road from HCMC). Hai Phong Port serves northern Vietnam, Nghi Son, and Hanoi industrial clusters. Sea freight from JNPT Mumbai: 14-18 days to Hai Phong, 16-20 days to Cat Lai. Import duties: Vietnam levies MFN (Most Favoured Nation) import duty of 0-10% on most industrial valves; under ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA) and India-ASEAN FTA, Indian-origin valves with Form D (Certificate of Origin) may benefit from reduced duty rates. Vietnam's customs requires commercial invoice, packing list, Form D (ASEAN origin certificate), and EN 10204 3.1 material certificates.
