About the Straight-Through Diaphragm Valve
The straight-through diaphragm valve (also called a full-bore diaphragm valve) has no raised weir inside the body - the flow path runs straight through from inlet to outlet without any obstruction in the open position. To close, the diaphragm is driven down by the compressor stem until it spans the full pipe bore and contacts the smooth floor of the body, blocking flow completely. Because the diaphragm must travel the full distance from the top of the bore to the bottom, the closing stroke is longer and the actuating force is higher than in a weir-type diaphragm valve. However, the elimination of the weir behind which solids accumulate makes the straight-through design essential for slurry, viscous, and fibrous fluid applications where a weir-type design would cause build-up behind the weir and eventual blockage.
The straight-through design also provides superior drainability - when the valve is fully open, the body interior is flush with the pipe bore, with no weir to trap liquid or solid material. This makes straight-through diaphragm valves ideal for applications where residual product must drain fully from the valve body: mining slurry lines, pulp stock, fruit juice concentrate, and other food-grade viscous products. Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies straight-through diaphragm valves in sizes 1" to 8" in PVC, PVDF, rubber-lined iron, and SS316 body materials with diaphragm options including PTFE, EPDM, Natural Rubber, and Neoprene to BS 5156.
Where It's Used
Key industries and applications for the Straight-Through Diaphragm Valve
Mining and mineral processing slurry
rubber-lined iron or SS316 straight-through diaphragm valves for tailings slurry, ore concentrate, and leach solution lines; natural rubber or EPDM diaphragm handles abrasive particle-laden slurry; zero-crevice design prevents solid build-up
Pulp and paper
rubber-lined or SS316 straight-through diaphragm valves for wood chip slurry, pulp stock, and fibre-laden process streams; full bore ensures fibres do not accumulate behind a weir and cause blockage during low-flow conditions
Food and beverage viscous products
SS316 straight-through diaphragm valves for tomato paste, jam, syrup concentrate, and similar high-viscosity food products; CIP-compatible with EPDM diaphragm; full-bore design allows complete draining and cleaning
Cement and concrete admixture
PVC or rubber-lined straight-through diaphragm valves for cement slurry, concrete admixture, and bentonite grout in construction and tunnel boring applications; low pressure PN6–PN10 suits gravity-fed mixing systems
Wastewater and sludge
rubber-lined iron straight-through diaphragm valves for raw sewage, primary sludge, and grit slurry in municipal wastewater treatment plants; full-bore design handles rag and fibrous material without entanglement on a weir
How to Choose the Right Straight-Through Diaphragm Valve
Select the straight-through diaphragm valve over the weir type when: (a) the fluid carries suspended solids, fibres, or high-viscosity particles that would accumulate behind a weir; (b) complete drainage of the valve body is required for CIP cleaning or batch changeover; (c) the fluid is a viscous paste or slurry where weir-type throttling is not required - the straight-through is used primarily for on/off isolation in these applications. For clean low-viscosity fluids requiring throttling control, the weir type is preferred for its better control characteristic and longer diaphragm life.
