About the Weir Type Diaphragm Valve
The weir type diaphragm valve is a bi-directional shut-off and throttling valve in which a flexible diaphragm - made of PTFE, EPDM, natural rubber, neoprene, or NBR - is pressed down onto a raised weir (saddle) in the valve body to close the flow path. The diaphragm is the only wetted moving part: there is no packing box, no stem-to-fluid contact, and no contamination path between the process fluid and the actuating mechanism. This zero-packing-emission design makes diaphragm valves the preferred choice for ultra-pure, sterile, corrosive, and toxic service.
The weir design - where the body incorporates a raised saddle that the diaphragm seats against - allows a shorter diaphragm stroke than a straight-through design, providing better throttling control and longer diaphragm life. The trade-off is that the weir presents some restriction to full-bore flow; for abrasive slurry or viscous media where solids can accumulate behind the weir, a straight-through (full-bore) diaphragm valve is preferred.
Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies weir-type diaphragm valves in sizes 1/2" to 12" in PVC, PVDF, polypropylene, PTFE-lined iron, Stainless Steel 316L, and Hastelloy C-276 body materials. Diaphragm materials are selected per fluid compatibility: PTFE for universal chemical resistance, EPDM for steam and hot water, EPDM/PTFE sandwich for ultra-pure pharmaceutical water, and natural rubber for vacuum service. Manual, pneumatic, and electric actuator options are available.
Where It's Used
Key industries and applications for the Weir Type Diaphragm Valve
Pharmaceutical and biotech
SS316L with PTFE/EPDM sandwich diaphragm and electropolished interior finish Ra ≤ 0.4 μm for WFI (water for injection), purified water, CIP cleaning circuits, and bioreactor media lines; 3-A certified designs available
Ultrapure semiconductor and water treatment
PVDF or PFA-lined diaphragm valves for ultrapure water (UPW), hydrofluoric acid, hydrogen peroxide, and sulfuric acid in semiconductor fab process lines; metal-free wetted parts
Chemical processing
PTFE-lined steel body weir diaphragm valves for concentrated acids (H₂SO₄, HCl, HNO₃), caustic soda, and chlorinated solvents where elastomer-lined alternatives are attacked
Food and beverage
EPDM diaphragm with FDA-compliant / USP Class VI materials for milk, juice, beer, and syrup lines; CIP/SIP-compatible designs with aseptic bonnets prevent microbial growth
Wastewater and water treatment
rubber-lined diaphragm valves for sludge, grit, and alum slurry service in municipal WTPs and WWTPs; packing-free design eliminates the main failure mode of conventional valves in dirty service
How to Choose the Right Weir Type Diaphragm Valve
Select weir diaphragm over straight-through for clean, low-viscosity fluids where throttling control is needed (weir gives better control). Select straight-through when the fluid carries solids that could accumulate behind the weir, or when truly full-bore flow is required. Choose PTFE diaphragm for broad chemical compatibility; EPDM for steam service; natural rubber for vacuum or abrasive-particle slurry. Specify surface finish (Ra, μm) for pharmaceutical/food applications - standard Ra ≤ 0.8 μm, electropolished Ra ≤ 0.4 μm available.
