About the Y-Type Strainer
The Y-type strainer is the most commonly installed inline filtration device in industrial piping systems, used to protect pumps, meters, control valves, steam traps, heat exchangers, and instrumentation from damage caused by pipe scale, weld splatter, sand, grit, and other solid contaminants. The Y-shaped body positions the screen element at a 45-degree angle to the flow path, creating a large filtration area relative to the pipe bore while keeping the face-to-face length short.
The perforated or mesh screen element is the key component: mesh size determines what particle size is retained. Standard industrial installations use 20–40 mesh (400–800 μm) for general duties; 100 mesh (150 μm) for control valve protection; and up to 200 mesh (75 μm) for sensitive meter or pump protection. The screen is accessed for cleaning by removing the blow-off plug at the bottom of the Y branch - this can be done while the line is in service if a blow-down valve is connected.
Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies Y-type strainers in sizes 1/2" to 24" in Cast Iron, Ductile Iron, Carbon Steel WCB, and Stainless Steel SS304/SS316 body materials. Pressure classes PN10 to PN40 (Class 150 to 600). All screens are SS304 or SS316 with perforated sheet (standard) or wire mesh (fine filtration). Threaded, socket weld, and flanged end connections are available. Monel, Hastelloy, and titanium screens are available for corrosive duties.
Where It's Used
Key industries and applications for the Y-Type Strainer
Pump protection
installed immediately upstream of pump suction to prevent solids from entering pump impellers; typical mesh 20–40 (800–400 μm); sized so pressure drop across clean screen is < 0.15 bar to avoid cavitation
Control valve protection
fine mesh (100–200 mesh) Y-strainer upstream of every control valve to protect soft seats and plug faces from abrasive particles; inadequate strainer protection is one of the most common causes of premature control valve failure
Steam lines
Y-strainers before steam traps, steam turbines, and direct-injection humidifiers to remove pipe scale and mill scale from steam distribution systems; SS316 screen resists steam condensate corrosion
Cooling water systems
Y-strainers in cooling tower supply lines, condenser water circuits, and heat exchanger inlets to remove algae, bio-film particulates, and scale fragments; large-bore units up to 24"
Chemical dosing and sampling
small-bore (1/2"–2") SS316 Y-strainers with fine mesh upstream of chemical injection quills, analyser sample taps, and pH probes to prevent blockage of narrow-bore orifices
How to Choose the Right Y-Type Strainer
Size a Y-strainer so velocity through the screen element does not exceed 1.5 m/s at design flow (to limit pressure drop and prevent screen collapse). Select mesh size based on the downstream equipment: 20–40 mesh for general pump protection, 80–100 mesh for control valves and meters, 150–200 mesh for precision instrumentation. Install with the screen leg pointing downward or horizontally - never upward - so solids collect by gravity in the blow-off leg rather than re-entraining into the line.
