API 622 Globe Valves

What API 622 requires for globe valves — applicability, key and testing requirements, the alternative standards, and compliant supply with full certification.

What does API 622 require for globe valves?

API 622 (API 622 - Type Testing of Process Valve Packing for Fugitive Emissions, American Petroleum Institute (API)) sets the design, material and testing requirements for globe valves in its scope. API 622 specifies type testing requirements for compression packing used in gate, globe, and other rising-stem valves to qualify packing sets for fugitive emissions service - complementing API 641 for ball valve stem seals.

Applicable Pressure Classes

Class 150Class 300Class 600Class 900Class 1500

Key Requirements

  • Test valve: 2-inch Class 600 gate valve with rising stem
  • Test fluid: helium at 600 psig (41 bar g)
  • Thermal cycling: 1,500 cycles between ambient and 450°F (232°C)
  • Acceptance: leak rate not to exceed 100 ppm v/v (EPA Method 21 equivalent)
  • Packing qualification applies to the specific packing set, stuffing box geometry, and stem diameter tested
  • Third-party witness testing at accredited laboratory required for qualification certificate

Testing Requirements

  • 1,500 thermal cycle helium leak test
  • Witnessed by independent third party
