API 624 Globe Valves

What API 624 requires for globe valves — applicability, key and testing requirements, the alternative standards, and compliant supply with full certification.

What does API 624 require for globe valves?

API 624 (API 624 - Type Testing of Rising and Setting Stem Valves Equipped with Graphite Packing for Fugitive Emissions, American Petroleum Institute (API)) sets the design, material and testing requirements for globe valves in its scope. API 624 extends API 622 by specifying complete valve-level fugitive emissions type testing for gate and globe valves equipped with graphite packing - a valve-level certification complementing the packing-level API 622 test.

Applicable Pressure Classes

Class 150Class 300Class 600Class 900Class 1500Class 2500

Key Requirements

  • Complete valve assembly test (not just packing): 2-inch Class 600 gate or globe valve
  • Test fluid: helium at 600 psig; temperature: ambient to 450°F (232°C) cycling
  • 1,500 thermal cycles with leak measurement after cycles 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1500
  • Acceptance: leak rate not to exceed 100 ppm v/v at any measurement point
  • Packing adjustment allowed only at specific intervals per the test protocol
  • Valve passes as a model family - all sizes/classes of same bonnet design qualified

Testing Requirements

  • 1,500 thermal cycle helium leak test on complete valve assembly
  • ISO 21049 or ASME B16.34 dimensional compliance verification
