ISO 17292 Ball Valves
What ISO 17292 requires for ball valves — applicability, key and testing requirements, the alternative standards, and compliant supply with full certification.
What does ISO 17292 require for ball valves?
ISO 17292 (ISO 17292 - Metal Ball Valves for Petroleum, Petrochemical and Allied Industries, International Organization for Standardization (ISO)) sets the design, material and testing requirements for ball valves in its scope. ISO 17292 is the international equivalent of API 6D for ball valves, widely required on Asian and Middle East tenders alongside or instead of API 6D - especially for projects outside North America.
Applicable Pressure Classes
Key Requirements
- Full-bore (full-port) and reduced-bore (reduced-port) designs covered
- Pressure-temperature ratings per ASME B16.34 or EN 1092-1 / ASME B16.5 flanges
- Hydrostatic shell test at 1.5× rated pressure; seat test at rated pressure
- Fire-safe design requirements (reference to ISO 10497 fire test)
- Anti-static device and blow-out-proof stem mandatory
- Bidirectional seating capability required for pipeline service
Testing Requirements
- Shell hydrostatic test 1.5× rated pressure
- Seat test at rated pressure bidirectional
- Optional fire test to ISO 10497
Alternative Standards for Ball Valves
Other standards that also govern ball valves — useful for spec cross-acceptance.
