Butterfly Valves for Fire Protection Systems

FM/UL-listed OS&Y gate valves and butterfly valves for sprinkler and fire suppression systems, deluge valves for foam-water systems, and fire hydrant main isolation valves per NFPA 13 and IS 15105.

Which butterfly valves are used for fire protection systems?

Fire protection systems demand valves that are reliable, tamper-indicating, and listed by recognised testing authorities (FM Global, UL, or LPC). From OS&Y (Outside Screw and Yoke) gate valves on sprinkler risers to deluge valves on foam-water systems protecting oil tank farms, and butterfly valves with supervisory switches on fire water mains - every valve must provide visual indication of position, resist unauthorised closure, and open fully with no flow restriction. Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies FM/UL-listed fire protection valves for sprinkler, deluge, foam, and fire hydrant systems complying with NFPA 13 (USA), IS 15105 (India), and EN 1074 (Europe).

Butterfly Valve (Supervisory Switch)

Fire water main and zone valves - large bore, tamper-switch for alarm panel supervisory signal; FM approved

MaterialsWCB body; ductile iron or SS316 disc; EPDM seat; integral supervisory tamper switch
Pressure ClassClass 150 / PN 16
StandardsUL 668, FM 1112, NFPA 13, AWWA C504

Critical Requirements

  • FM Global or UL listing mandatory for all valves on automatic sprinkler systems (NFPA 13 Clause 6.1) - unlisted valves are not accepted by insurance underwriters
  • OS&Y (Outside Screw and Yoke) design mandatory for sprinkler system control valves - the screw position provides immediate visual indication; alternatively, post-indicator or wall-indicator valve types are used outdoors
  • Supervisory tamper switch mandatory for all fire system valves - connected to fire alarm panel to alert when valve is partially or fully closed
  • No pressure drop - full-bore gate valves only; no globe valves on sprinkler mains (excessive pressure drop reduces sprinkler design density)
  • IS 15105 compliance for Indian projects - Indian standard for fire fighting valves; requires BIS certification for some valve types
  • Firewater main valves must be car-sealed open (CSO) or locked open - cannot rely on procedural controls alone

Service Challenges

  • Fire water (raw river, tank, or municipal supply) - mineral-laden, biological growth risk; rubber seats and linings resist deposits better than metal seats
  • Foam-water for tank farm protection - AFFF or AR-AFFF concentrate; EPDM seats compatible with all foam types
  • Dry pipe systems - pressurised air until actuation; valve must operate at low temperatures in freezing climates
  • High-expansion foam systems - low-density foam blanket; requires large-bore deluge valves for rapid coverage
  • Wet chemical (kitchen suppression) - potassium carbonate solution; SS316L for chemical compatibility
