About the Solenoid Valve
The solenoid valve is the electrically controlled pilot device that commands a pneumatic actuator to open or close. An electromagnetic coil, when energised by an electrical signal from the DCS, PLC, or ESD system, creates a magnetic field that moves a plunger to direct compressed air to the actuator ports - driving the actuator to the commanded position. When the coil is de-energised (or on power failure), the plunger returns to its de-energised position under spring force, directing air to the opposite actuator port (double-acting) or venting actuator air (spring-return) to cause the actuator and valve to move to the fail-safe position.
Configuration is critical: 3/2-way solenoid valves have three ports and two positions - used with spring-return (single-acting) actuators to supply air in one direction and vent in the other. 5/2-way solenoid valves have five ports and two positions - used with double-acting actuators to direct air alternately to open and close ports. 5/3-way solenoid valves have five ports and three positions (open, close, and mid-position hold) - used for lock-in-last-position service or modulating actuators. NAMUR-mount solenoid valves fit directly onto the NAMUR pad on the actuator body without external tubing, eliminating external air connection leak points. ATEX-rated explosion-proof coils are mandatory for hazardous area installation. Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies NAMUR-mount and in-line solenoid valves in 24V DC, 110V AC, and 220V AC in IP65 and Ex-rated designs.
Where It's Used
Key industries and applications for the Solenoid Valve
ESD valve control
ATEX Ex d 24V DC solenoid valves on spring-return pneumatic actuators in ESD systems; normally-energised to hold valve open, de-energise on trip signal to vent actuator air and allow spring to close valve; SIL 2 rated coils available
Process automation actuator control
NAMUR-mount 24V DC or 220V AC solenoid valves on double-acting rack & pinion actuators for automated on/off ball and butterfly valves in chemical, refinery, and process plants; limit switch box mounted alongside for position confirmation
Offshore and marine platform
ATEX Ex d stainless steel solenoid valves on ESD and process actuators in classified Zone 1 hazardous areas; SS316 body resists marine atmospheric corrosion; coated coil withstands high humidity and salt spray
HVAC and building automation
compact 24V DC solenoid valves on small pneumatic actuators for chilled water, heating water, and ventilation damper actuation in building automation systems; IP65 rated for outdoor or wet plant room service
Batch and sequence control
5/2-way solenoid valves on double-acting cylinder-actuated pinch valves and diaphragm valves in batch chemical dosing and filling systems; PLC-controlled open/close sequencing with precise timing for accurate batch volumes
How to Choose the Right Solenoid Valve
Select solenoid valve configuration based on actuator action: 3/2-way for spring-return (fail-safe) actuators; 5/2-way for double-acting actuators; 5/3-way for lock-in-last-position service. Always specify normally energised (NC) for fail-open valves (solenoid energised = valve closed; de-energised = spring opens) and normally de-energised (NO) for most process control valves. For ESD applications: use de-energise-to-trip (de-energised solenoid = ESD valve closes) to ensure the valve closes on power loss. Confirm ATEX zone and gas group, coil voltage, and port size match the actuator connection.
