About the Lubricated Plug Valve
The lubricated plug valve is a quarter-turn valve in which a tapered or cylindrical plug rotates within a precision-bored body cavity, with a liquid or semi-solid sealant injected between the plug face and the body bore to provide sealing and reduce operating torque. The sealant (a proprietary grease or oil compound matched to the process fluid) fills the microscopic surface imperfections between plug and body, creating a pressure-tight seal without needing precisely machined surfaces. A check-valve-equipped lubricant injection fitting on the plug stem allows field injection of additional sealant without depressurising the valve - restoring sealing if the original sealant is washed out or degraded.
Lubricated plug valves are particularly valued in gas distribution, where the metal-to-metal design provides inherent fire safety with no elastomer components to burn, and where the ability to re-lubricate in service dramatically extends valve service life. The pressure-balanced design incorporates a relief groove around the plug that equalises pressure between the upstream and cavity, preventing the plug from being hydraulically locked into the body under high differential pressure. Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies lubricated plug valves in sizes 1/2" to 12" in Cast Iron, Carbon Steel, and Stainless Steel to API 599 and MSS SP-78.
Where It's Used
Key industries and applications for the Lubricated Plug Valve
Gas distribution networks
Cast Iron or Carbon Steel lubricated plug valves for natural gas town border stations, district regulator inlets, and service connection isolation; field re-lubrication extends service interval to 10+ years without valve removal
Oil field wellhead and gathering
Carbon Steel lubricated plug valves on wellhead Christmas tree connections, production manifold isolation, and test headers; H2S-resistant sealant compounds available for sour gas service
Slurry and abrasive media
SS316 hard-faced lubricated plug valves for abrasive slurry lines in mining, cement, and mineral processing; sealant injection keeps abrasive particles from embedding in the seating surfaces
Corrosive chemical service
SS316 lubricated plug valves with chemically compatible sealant for moderately corrosive acids and alkalis where PTFE-sleeved designs cannot withstand the temperature or concentration; sealant barrier prevents body corrosion
Pipeline pigs and maintenance
large-bore Class 150–300 Carbon Steel lubricated plug valves at pipeline pigging trap connections; full-bore conduit plug allows pig passage; sealant re-injection maintains seal integrity during infrequent cycling
How to Choose the Right Lubricated Plug Valve
Choose lubricated plug valves for: (a) gas distribution where the ability to inject sealant in service without shutdown is a maintenance advantage; (b) abrasive slurry or solids-laden fluids where metal-to-metal seating with sealant protection outperforms elastomer designs; (c) bi-directional service where metal-to-metal seating provides reliable shut-off in both directions. Specify the sealant compound to be compatible with the process fluid - ask the manufacturer for a sealant compatibility matrix. For clean chemical service without abrasives, a PTFE-sleeved plug valve is maintenance-free.
