About the Sleeved Plug Valve
The sleeved plug valve (also called a non-lubricated plug valve) uses a PTFE or PFA sleeve that lines the inside of the valve body cavity and forms the seating surface against the plug faces. The sleeve is slightly compressed between the body and plug, creating a positive seal without the need for any sealant injection. PTFE's inherent self-lubricating properties allow the plug to rotate through the sleeve with low torque even after extended periods at rest, eliminating the common problem with lubricated plug valves where the sealant dries out and the plug seizes if the valve is infrequently operated.
The PTFE or PFA sleeve also provides the wetted surfaces of the valve with broad chemical resistance, since PTFE is compatible with most acids, alkalis, solvents, and oxidising media at temperatures up to 200°C. The plug and body metal components are isolated from the process fluid by the sleeve - making sleeved plug valves the preferred choice in pharmaceutical, food grade, and ultra-pure water services where metal contamination of the process must be prevented. How to Choose the Right Sleeved Plug Valve
Specify a sleeved plug valve over a lubricated plug valve when: (a) the process fluid is a clean chemical that cannot tolerate sealant contamination; (b) the valve will be infrequently operated and sealant dry-out seizure is a risk; (c) pharmaceutical, food, or semiconductor purity requirements prohibit lubricated designs. Sleeve material selection: PTFE for standard chemical service up to 200°C; PFA for pharmaceutical/ultra-pure applications requiring lower extractables; sleeve should always be confirmed chemically compatible with the process fluid, temperature, and pressure.
