About the 3-Way Plug Valve
The 3-way plug valve performs diversion and switching functions in a single compact quarter-turn body, using a plug machined with a T-shaped or L-shaped through-port. A T-port plug connects all three ports simultaneously when positioned at the 45° mid-position, enabling flow mixing or splitting between an inlet and two outlets (or vice versa), and in the two 90° positions connects only the inlet to one selected outlet. An L-port plug connects only one pair of adjacent ports at a time, functioning as a pure diverter that can switch flow from one circuit to another but cannot mix.
Plug valve multiport designs offer a significant advantage in applications where the flow passages carry viscous or particle-laden fluids: the plug bore is larger relative to the port opening than in ball valve designs, reducing the risk of clogging at the junction of the T or L port. Lubricated plug 3-way valves can handle H2S-containing gas service where PTFE-sleeved designs would degrade. For clean chemical service, PTFE-sleeved 3-way plug valves are maintenance-free with no sealant injection required.
