Butterfly Valves for Biogas & Biomass Plants

SS316L ball valves for biogas with H₂S, PVDF-lined butterfly valves for digestate, and IBR-certified gate valves for biomass-fired cogeneration steam boilers.

Which butterfly valves are used for biogas & biomass plants?

Biogas plants and biomass power facilities share the challenges of aggressive, corrosive fluids - raw biogas contains hydrogen sulphide (50–5,000 ppm H₂S), CO₂, and moisture that attack carbon steel; digestate slurry is abrasive and sticky; and biomass-fired boilers require IBR-certified steam valves. Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies the complete valve package for anaerobic digestion and biomass power: NACE MR0103-aware SS316L ball valves for biogas headers, PVDF-lined or rubber-lined butterfly valves for digestate, and IBR gate/globe/check valves for biomass cogeneration boilers.

Butterfly Valve (Rubber-Lined)

Digestate and slurry transfer - abrasive, fibrous, pH 7–8; rubber lining protects body from abrasion

MaterialsWCB body; EPDM lining and seat; SS316L disc for digestate corrosion resistance
Pressure ClassPN 10 / PN 16
StandardsEN 593, API 609, ASME B16.34

Critical Requirements

  • Biogas area (digester headspace, gas collection headers) - ATEX Zone 1; all actuators and accessories must carry Ex certification
  • H₂S in biogas - SS316L minimum for all wetted metallic parts; check NACE MR0103 if H₂S > 50 ppm partial pressure threshold
  • Digestate with fibrous solids - no wedge gate valves (fibre packs in cavity); use knife gate, rubber-lined butterfly, or pinch valves
  • Biogas fire-safe valves - all isolation valves on biogas headers must be fire-safe per API 607; biogas forms explosive mixtures at 5–15% vol in air
  • IBR certification for all biomass steam valves above 3.5 kg/cm² - Form III-C and III-E required
  • CIP compatibility for digestate valves - rubber seats must withstand 80°C caustic soda wash cycles during cleaning

Service Challenges

  • Raw biogas (CH₄ 55–70%, CO₂ 30–45%, H₂S 50–5,000 ppm, H₂O saturated) - corrosive to carbon steel; fire/explosion hazard
  • Upgraded biomethane (> 97% CH₄, H₂S stripped) - treated as natural gas; IS 15901 or API 6D applicable
  • Digestate slurry - total solids 2–10%; pH 7–8; abrasive plant material; causes wear in standard butterfly valves
  • Biogas condensate - slightly acidic H₂S + CO₂ dissolved in water; attacks carbon steel; SS316L or PVC drainage valves
  • Biomass combustion ash - silica and alkali-rich; ash handling valves need abrasion-resistant design (knife gate or pinch valve)
