API 607 is the fire-test standard for quarter-turn valves (ball valves and butterfly valves) and other valves with soft (non-metallic) seats and seals.
Overview — API 607
API 607 is the fire-test standard for quarter-turn valves (ball valves and butterfly valves) and other valves with soft (non-metallic) seats and seals. It defines the test procedure to verify that a valve can isolate flow during and after a fire exposure — preventing the catastrophic release of flammable or toxic hydrocarbons. API 607 fire-safe testing is mandatory for all quarter-turn valves in hydrocarbon service.
Scope
Applies to quarter-turn valves with non-metallic (soft) seats and seals: ball valves (floating and trunnion), butterfly valves (concentric and high-performance), and any other valve where fire exposure could cause catastrophic seat failure. Covers NPS ½" to 24".

Key Requirements — API 607
Valve must limit leakage during fire exposure to ≤200 mL/min through seat and ≤50 mL/min through stem seal
Fire exposure test: 750°C to 1100°C for 30 minutes, then 3 minutes water spray quench
Post-fire operational test: valve must open and close after fire test
Post-fire seat leakage test: ≤200 mL/min through seat after quench
Emergency metal-to-metal seat backup is required for qualification
Anti-static device must remain functional after fire test
Testing Requirements — API 607
Fire test per API 607: 750–1100°C for 30 minutes
Post-fire leakage test: seats ≤200 mL/min, stem ≤50 mL/min
Post-fire operational test: full open/close cycle
Certificate of qualification (CoQ) from accredited test facility
