About the Angle Type Control Valve

The angle type control valve has its inlet and outlet at 90 degrees to each other, creating an inherently self-draining body with a straight, unobstructed flow path from the seat exit directly to the outlet. This geometry provides two key operational advantages over standard globe body control valves: first, the angle body is completely self-draining with no internal cavity where flashing liquid vapour can accumulate and cause erosion damage to the body walls - the outlet of the seat ring is directed straight downward into the outlet pipe; second, erosive particles entrained in the flow are directed out of the valve body immediately after passing through the seat, rather than impacting and eroding the bottom of the globe valve body cavity.

These characteristics make angle body control valves the preferred design for flashing liquid service - wherever liquid pressure drops below its vapour pressure at the valve restriction, causing vapour bubbles to form. In a standard globe body, these bubbles collapse (cavitate) against the body floor, creating highly localised erosion that can perforate a carbon steel body in weeks. The angle body redirects the cavitating/flashing fluid directly out of the valve body before bubble collapse can erode the body. Hardened trim (Stellite, Tungsten Carbide overlay) is specified for high-velocity erosive service. Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies angle type control valves in sizes 1/2" to 8" to IEC 60534 and API 553.

Where It's Used

Key industries and applications for the Angle Type Control Valve

1

Boiler feed water control

Class 300–600 Carbon Steel or WC9 angle control valves for boiler feed water level control at drum operating pressure; self-draining body prevents steam locking; Stellite trim for high-velocity feed water erosion resistance

2

Condensate level control

angle control valves on HP feedwater heater and condenser level control valves where condensate flashes to steam as it lets down to lower pressure; angle body directs flash vapour out of valve immediately

3

Flashing hydrocarbon let-down

SS316 or WC6 angle control valves on light hydrocarbon (LPG, naphtha, condensate) pressure reduction stations where the liquid flashes to two-phase (liquid + vapour); angle body and hardened trim prevent rapid body erosion

4

Erosive slurry flow control

angle control valves with Tungsten Carbide (WC) plug and seat for fine abrasive slurry service in mineral processing; angle body directs abrasive stream straight through without impacting the valve body cavity

5

High-pressure let-down gas service

Class 600–900 angle control valves for high-pressure gas injection let-down; straight-through angle body provides lower pressure recovery (higher Fl factor) than globe body - more stable operation with high ΔP

How to Choose the Right Angle Type Control Valve

Specify an angle type control valve when: (a) the liquid service predicts flashing (using IEC 60534 Pv vapour pressure check) - angle body redirects flash vapour directly to the outlet; (b) the service involves high-velocity erosive particles requiring hardened trim and a body geometry that does not allow impingement on the body floor; (c) the piping makes a 90-degree turn at the valve location, saving an elbow; or (d) complete body self-draining is required for batch or pharmaceutical service. For non-flashing liquid and gas service, a standard globe or cage-guided control valve is more common.
