About the Globe Type Control Valve
The globe type control valve is the most widely used modulating control valve in process industry, valued for its predictable and characterisable flow control throughout the valve travel range. The parabolic or contoured plug moves linearly within a seat ring, with the annular flow area between plug and seat varying proportionally with stem travel. By shaping the plug profile, the flow characteristic can be engineered to be equal-percentage (Cv increases exponentially with valve travel - most common for liquid and gas process control loops), linear (Cv increases linearly - preferred for characterised control systems), or quick-open (large Cv increase at small opening - for on/off or blending service).
Single-seat globe control valves (plug seals against a single seat ring) provide tight shut-off with ANSI Class IV or Class VI leakage, required wherever the valve must serve as an isolation device as well as a throttling device. Double-seat globe control valves use two seats with plug faces simultaneously, nearly balancing the pressure forces on the plug and dramatically reducing actuator force requirements - useful for very large sizes or high pressure drops. How to Choose the Right Globe Type Control Valve
Globe type control valves are the standard choice for general-purpose modulating control in clean and moderately clean liquids, gases, and steam. Size the valve using IEC 60534 Cv calculation at maximum flow (valve approximately 80% open) and minimum flow (valve approximately 20% open) - the ratio of these two Cvs determines the required rangeability. Select equal-percentage trim for most process loops; linear trim for direct-acting control systems. For clean, non-flashing liquids and gases below 100°C with low pressure drop, a V-port ball valve or butterfly control valve may be more economical in larger sizes.
