About the Cage Guided Control Valve

The cage guided control valve replaces the traditional plug-guided-by-stem-and-packing design with a cylindrical cage - a machined stainless steel sleeve with precisely profiled window openings through which process fluid passes. The plug is guided by the inner bore of the cage at both top and bottom, providing far more precise and stable plug positioning than conventional stem guidance, particularly at low stem travels where plug instability (plug vibration and chattering) is most common in conventional plug-guided valves. The cage windows define the flow characteristic: window shape and geometry determine whether the valve has equal-percentage, linear, or quick-open characteristics.

The cage trim architecture also enables specialised anti-cavitation and noise attenuation trim designs. Anti-cavitation cages use a multi-stage pressure drop concept: the fluid passes through a series of restricting passages in the cage, each taking a fraction of the total pressure drop, so that local pressure at each stage never falls to vapour pressure and cavitation is prevented. Noise attenuation trim uses multiple small holes or tortuous path flow passages to limit fluid velocity and diffuse high-frequency acoustic energy, reducing aerodynamic noise from high-pressure gas and steam let-down service to below IEC 60534-8-3 limits. Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies cage guided control valves in sizes 1" to 16" in Class 150 to 1500 with standard, anti-cavitation, and noise-attenuation trim options.

Where It's Used

Key industries and applications for the Cage Guided Control Valve

1

Boiler feed water let-down

Class 600–900 WCB or WC9 cage guided control valves with anti-cavitation trim for high-pressure BFW let-down from HP drum to LP drum or deaerator; high ΔP across single stage would cause destructive cavitation without staged trim

2

Gas and steam pressure let-down

noise-attenuation cage trim control valves on HP/MP natural gas pressure reduction, steam let-down from boiler to user, and compressor anti-surge recycle; multi-hole trim reduces aerodynamic noise to below 85 dB(A) at pipe wall

3

Refinery column pressure control

Class 300–600 cage guided control valves for distillation column overhead pressure and reflux flow control; cage guidance prevents plug instability at low flows typical of start-up and turndown operation

4

Water injection and high-ΔP liquid service

anti-cavitation cage control valves on seawater injection pump recycle, cooling water pressure let-down, and produced water injection; multi-stage pressure drop eliminates cavitation that destroys conventional single-stage trim

5

Cryogenic LNG and ethylene service

SS316 or Duplex cage guided control valves for LNG send-out flow control, ethylene feed let-down, and low-temperature process control at -100°C to -196°C; cage guidance provides stable plug control at all temperatures

How to Choose the Right Cage Guided Control Valve

Specify cage guided control valves over conventional plug-guided globe valves when: (a) the service involves high ΔP where cavitation prediction (using Fl or Km factor from IEC 60534) indicates incipient cavitation - specify anti-cavitation cage trim; (b) aerodynamic noise from gas or steam pressure drop will exceed 85 dB(A) - specify noise-attenuation trim; (c) the valve will operate at low plug travel (below 30% of stroke) where plug instability is a concern - cage guidance eliminates this; or (d) Class 150/300 service at high flow rates benefits from the cage's higher Cv per nominal pipe size. Cage trim is field-replaceable without removing the valve from the line - a significant maintenance advantage.
