About the High-Performance Butterfly Control Valve

The high-performance butterfly control valve uses a double-offset disc geometry - the disc shaft is positioned behind the disc centreline and to one side of the seat bore - to reduce the continuous rubbing contact between disc edge and seat during the opening stroke that limits the service life of concentric butterfly valves in modulating duty. The double offset means the disc edge lifts cleanly away from the seat within the first few degrees of opening, avoiding the seat wear that makes concentric butterfly valves unsuitable for throttling service. A characterised disc profile (contoured disc edge) shapes the flow versus disc angle characteristic to approximate an equal-percentage or linear curve per IEC 60534, providing a usable throttling range of approximately 10%–70% disc rotation.

Butterfly control valves offer a compelling economic advantage in large-diameter applications: a 16" butterfly control valve costs 30–50% less than an equivalent globe control valve and has a smaller face-to-face dimension, yet provides comparable flow control performance for the clean, single-phase fluids typical of water, HVAC, and general industrial process applications. How to Choose the Right High-Performance Butterfly Control Valve

Butterfly control valves are the economical choice for large-diameter (typically 6"–48") modulating control of clean, single-phase liquids and gases at Class 150–300 pressures. The usable throttling range is approximately 10%–70% of disc rotation - ensure the minimum controllable Cv at minimum flow corresponds to at least 10% disc rotation. For high ΔP, flashing liquids, erosive fluids, or Class 300+ service, a globe or cage-guided control valve is more appropriate. Always specify a characterised (profiled) disc and a HART positioner for acceptable control loop performance - standard butterfly valves with on/off actuators are not suitable for modulating control.
