About the Standard Needle Valve

The needle valve is a precision flow-control valve used primarily in instrumentation tubing and small-bore process lines where fine, accurate adjustment of flow is required at pressures up to 6,000 psi (414 bar) - far exceeding what any other compact valve type can achieve. The valve consists of a slender, tapered needle-point plunger that screws into a precision-machined orifice seat. The very small annular flow area between needle and seat at any given stem position gives the valve its characteristic fine, proportional flow control. Multiple turns of the handwheel are required to open fully - this deliberately slow response allows precise adjustment without risk of accidentally slamming the valve open.

Needle valves in instrumentation service perform three distinct functions: isolation (root valves that isolate instruments from the process), flow restriction (constant-flow bleed valves on sample probes), and double-block-and-bleed (DBB) for instrument removal without line depressurisation. Single needle valves, 2-valve manifolds, 3-valve manifolds, and 5-valve manifolds for DP (differential pressure) transmitters are all part of the same product family.

Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies needle valves in body materials of SS316, SS316L, Monel 400, Alloy 20, Hastelloy C-276, and Titanium Grade 2. NPT and BSP screwed ends, compression tube fittings, and flanged ends (for manifolds) cover all instrumentation connection standards. Packing materials include PTFE (standard), graphite (high-temperature), and PEEK (aggressive chemicals). Panel-mount and direct-weld versions for subsea and offshore are available.

Where It's Used

Key industries and applications for the Standard Needle Valve

1

Pressure transmitter and gauge root valves

single needle valves installed at the process connection to isolate gauges, transmitters, and switch instruments from process; rated pressure must match line MAWP

2

DP transmitter 5-valve manifolds

two needle isolation valves, two equalisation needles, and one bleed needle in a single compact manifold for differential pressure flow and level transmitters; factory set and tested for zero leak

3

Sample probe flow control

fine-metering needle valves set to constant low sample flow rates (1–5 L/min) in gas chromatograph analyser sample conditioning systems; SS316 with PTFE packing for hydrocarbon or H₂S service

4

Chemical injection quill metering

precision SS316 or Hastelloy needle valves controlling corrosion inhibitor, scale inhibitor, or biocide injection rates into pipelines and wellheads; typically 1/4"–1/2" for ml/h to L/h injection

5

Hydraulic and subsea control

Inconel or SS316 needle valves in HIPPS hydraulic control panels and subsea control modules (SCMs) for ultra-reliable isolation and controlled bleed-down in offshore applications

How to Choose the Right Standard Needle Valve

Select needle valve size based on the required Cv (flow coefficient) at the operating pressure drop - needle valves have very low Cv values and are not suitable for high-flow applications. Match body and packing material to fluid chemistry: SS316 for general process; Hastelloy C-276 or Alloy 20 for acids; Monel for caustic service; Titanium for seawater or HF acid. For DP transmitter applications, always specify a 5-valve manifold rather than individual root valves - the manifold enables safe zeroing and calibration without line shutdown.
