ManufacturersBronze Gate, Globe, Angle and Check Valves
MSS SP-80 covers the design, manufacture, and testing requirements for bronze gate, globe, angle, and swing check valves intended for general utility service at moderate temperatures and pressures.
Overview — MSS SP-80
MSS SP-80 covers the design, manufacture, and testing requirements for bronze gate, globe, angle, and swing check valves intended for general utility service at moderate temperatures and pressures. These bronze valves — rated at ASME Class 125 (PN 16) or Class 250 (PN 40) — are widely used in building services, HVAC, potable water, steam heating, compressed air, and light industrial applications where the relatively low pressure and non-aggressive fluid allow use of the more economical bronze alloy. They are the most common valve type in building utilities and plumbing infrastructure.
Scope
Covers bronze screwed (threaded) and solder-end gate, globe, angle, and swing check valves in sizes NPS ¼" through NPS 3", rated ASME Class 125 (steam) or Class 250 (steam/water), intended for water, steam, compressed air, gas, and other non-corrosive services compatible with bronze wetted parts.
Applicable Valve Types

Key Requirements — MSS SP-80
Class 125: 200 psi non-shock water/air at ambient; 125 psi steam saturated
Class 250: 500 psi non-shock water/air at ambient; 250 psi steam saturated
Body material: ASTM B62 (85-5-5-5), B584 UNS C89833/C87600, or equivalent copper alloy
Stem material: ASTM B99 (silicon bronze) or B371 (copper-zinc alloy) for gate valves
Disc/wedge: suitable bronze alloy with Brinell hardness per class
Packing: graphite, PTFE, or acceptable soft packing for temperature rating
Wheel handwheel or T-bar handle standard; lever optional
End connections: NPT threaded (ASME B1.20.1) or solder (ASME B16.18/B16.22)
Testing Requirements — MSS SP-80
Shell test: 2× working pressure, all valves, no leakage through body
Seat test: 1× working pressure, acceptable bubble rate per test criteria
Dimensional checks per MSS SP-80 tables for each valve type and size
Documentation Required for MSS SP-80 Compliance
MSS SP-80 compliance marking (SP-80, class, and manufacturer logo)
Pressure class marking on valve body
