What does API 607 require for butterfly valves?
API 607 (Fire Test for Quarter-Turn Valves and Valves Equipped with Nonmetallic Seats, American Petroleum Institute (API)) sets the design, material and testing requirements for butterfly valves in its scope. API 607 is the fire-test standard for quarter-turn valves (ball valves and butterfly valves) and other valves with soft (non-metallic) seats and seals. It defines the test procedure to verify that a valve can isolate flow during and after a fire exposure - preventing the catastrophic release of flammable or toxic hydrocarbons. API 607 fire-safe testing is mandatory for all quarter-turn valves in hydrocarbon service.

- Valve must limit leakage during fire exposure to ≤200 mL/min through seat and ≤50 mL/min through stem seal
- Fire exposure test: 750°C to 1100°C for 30 minutes, then 3 minutes water spray quench
- Post-fire operational test: valve must open and close after fire test
- Post-fire seat leakage test: ≤200 mL/min through seat after quench
- Emergency metal-to-metal seat backup is required for qualification
- Anti-static device must remain functional after fire test
