ISO 10497 Plug Valves
What ISO 10497 requires for plug valves — applicability, key and testing requirements, the alternative standards, and compliant supply with full certification.
What does ISO 10497 require for plug valves?
ISO 10497 (Testing of Valves - Fire Type-Testing Requirements, International Organization for Standardization (ISO)) sets the design, material and testing requirements for plug valves in its scope. ISO 10497 specifies the fire type-testing requirements for industrial valves to assess their ability to limit leakage during and after exposure to fire. It is the international equivalent of API 607 (for quarter-turn valves) and is increasingly specified alongside or instead of API 607 for global projects. ISO 10497 applies to all valve types including gate, ball, butterfly, globe, and plug valves.
Applicable Pressure Classes
Key Requirements
- Fire exposure: 750°C–1100°C for 30 minutes duration
- External leakage through stem, body joints ≤200 mL/min during fire
- Post-fire seat leakage test: ≤200 mL/min (liquid or gas equivalent)
- Post-fire operability: valve must complete one full open-close cycle
- Metal backup seat or secondary seating surface required
- Type test certificate valid for a family of valves with similar design features
Testing Requirements
- Fire test: 750–1100°C for 30 minutes in certified test facility
- Post-fire leakage: ≤200 mL/min through seats and body
- Post-fire operation: full open/close cycle
