About the Lug Type Butterfly Valve

The lug type butterfly valve features a valve body with threaded inserts (lugs) cast integrally around its perimeter that accept separate bolts from each pipe flange independently. This dual independent bolting arrangement is the key difference from a wafer butterfly valve: because each flange bolts directly to the lug without depending on through-bolts that span across both flanges, downstream piping can be disconnected and removed with the valve remaining in place and the upstream system fully pressurised. This dead-end service capability makes lug butterfly valves mandatory at pipeline termination points, equipment connections where maintenance involves removing downstream spools, and any location where one-sided disassembly is needed.

The lug body can also function as the end-of-line connection when the valve is at the terminal point of a pipeline or equipment nozzle - the valve body itself provides structural support to the piping without requiring downstream spool pieces. In dead-end position (closed, with downstream pipe removed), the lug butterfly valve must support full line pressure on the disc and seat; some designs are limited in dead-end pressure rating, so always confirm the manufacturer's dead-end pressure rating. Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies lug butterfly valves in sizes 2" to 36" in Ductile Iron, Carbon Steel, and Stainless Steel to API 609 and EN 593 with all standard seat materials.

Where It's Used

Key industries and applications for the Lug Type Butterfly Valve

1

Pump discharge connections

lug butterfly valves as the isolating valve between pump discharge flange and the downstream process pipe; allows pump removal for maintenance without draining the entire downstream system

2

Equipment and vessel nozzle connections

lug butterfly valves at the inlet or outlet nozzles of tanks, vessels, heat exchangers, and filter housings; dead-end service allows equipment isolation and removal while the upstream line remains in service

3

Fire protection dead-end service

UL/FM listed lug butterfly valves at dead-end sprinkler main connections, riser isolation, and hose cabinet connections; dead-end pressure rating must meet system design pressure

4

Water distribution and treatment

Ductile Iron lug butterfly valves on water treatment plant filter outlet headers and distribution main dead-ends; EPDM seat for potable water compliance (NSF/ANSI 61)

5

Modular skid and package plant connections

SS316 or Ductile Iron lug butterfly valves at module interconnect flanges; allows skid sections to be disconnected for maintenance without draining adjacent modules

How to Choose the Right Lug Type Butterfly Valve

Specify a lug butterfly valve over a wafer type whenever: (a) dead-end service is required (downstream pipe may be disconnected while the valve is in place and upstream pressure is maintained); (b) the valve is at a pipeline termination or equipment nozzle end point; or (c) the piping specification requires that maintenance workers can disconnect downstream sections safely. Verify the dead-end pressure rating from the manufacturer - it may be lower than the full bidirectional PN rating. Seat selection follows the same rules as for wafer butterfly valves.
