About the Triple Offset Butterfly Valve

The triple offset butterfly valve - also called triple eccentric butterfly valve - achieves tight shut-off (ANSI Class VI) with zero rubbing contact between disc and seat during the 90-degree stroking motion. The three offsets are: (1) the shaft is offset laterally from the centre of the seat bore so the disc clears the seat on opening; (2) the shaft is offset axially from the seat plane so the disc retreats away from the seat as it opens; and (3) the seat cone axis is angled relative to the pipe axis, giving a conical seating geometry that creates a single-point, tightening contact on closure.

This combined geometry means there is no rubbing, no friction, and no seat wear during the opening stroke - only a gentle cam-action contact at the last 1–2 degrees of closure. The result is a valve capable of providing bubble-tight metal-to-metal shut-off at full rated pressure across a temperature range from -196°C to +815°C, with a service life measured in decades. Fire-safe performance is inherent in the metal-seat design, and the valve meets API 609 Category B.

Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies triple offset butterfly valves in sizes 3" to 48" in Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel 316, Duplex, and Super Duplex body materials with Stellite- or SS316-faced seat rings. Pressure classes span PN16 to PN40 (Class 150 to 600). These valves are the go-to choice for refinery, LNG, power plant, and chemical plant applications where leakage to atmosphere or across seats is unacceptable.

Where It's Used

Key industries and applications for the Triple Offset Butterfly Valve

1

High-temperature steam and power plants

triple offset butterfly valves in WC9 or P91 alloy steel for main steam bypass, turbine admission, and extraction steam duties at temperatures up to 570°C

2

LNG and cryogenic service

SS316 / duplex triple offset butterfly valves for BOG (boil-off gas) headers, LNG transfer lines, and send-out headers at -196°C to +150°C

3

Refineries and petrochemical plants

fire-safe triple offset butterfly valves for crude oil, vacuum residue, hot oil heater bypasses, and vapour recovery units

4

Gas transmission

large-diameter Class 150/300 triple offset butterfly valves as compressor station block and bypass valves, offtake station metering, and town border stations

5

Chemical plants

SS316 or Hastelloy-trim triple offset butterfly valves for concentrated sulphuric acid, chlorine, and caustic services where elastomer-seated designs fail

How to Choose the Right Triple Offset Butterfly Valve

Specify a triple offset butterfly valve when: (a) the service requires ANSI Class IV–VI (metal-to-metal or bubble-tight) shut-off; (b) temperature exceeds 200°C where elastomer seats fail; (c) the fluid is a hydrocarbon, steam, or gas that requires fire-safe design per API 607; or (d) long service life with minimal maintenance is the priority. For low-pressure water, HVAC, or non-critical services below 150°C, a concentric rubber-seated butterfly valve is more economical.
