About the Wafer Type Butterfly Valve
The wafer type butterfly valve is a concentric (centric) design in which the disc shaft runs through the centre of the disc and is aligned exactly with the pipe centreline, and the disc closes against a resilient elastomer seat that is bonded or press-fitted into the valve body. The wafer body style has no integral flanges - it clamps between two pipe flanges using through-bolts that span the full flange-to-flange gap. This eliminates the weight and cost of integral flanges, making wafer butterfly valves by far the lightest and most compact large-bore isolation valve available: a DN600 (24") wafer butterfly valve typically weighs less than one-tenth of an equivalent gate valve.
The resilient elastomer seat (EPDM, NBR, PTFE, or Viton) provides bubble-tight shut-off at low differential pressures and tolerates a degree of seat wear without immediate leakage. The concentric design means the disc edge contacts and compresses the seat ring as it swings to the closed position, creating an interference seal. However, this contact also means that partial-open positions cause rapid seat wear - wafer butterfly valves are best used for on/off isolation, not throttling. Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies wafer butterfly valves in sizes 2" to 48" (DN50 to DN1200) in Ductile Iron, Cast Iron, Carbon Steel, and Stainless Steel body, conforming to API 609, EN 593, and AWWA C504.
Where It's Used
Key industries and applications for the Wafer Type Butterfly Valve
Water and wastewater treatment plants
Ductile Iron wafer butterfly valves with EPDM seat for water supply, filter inlet/outlet, clarifier and sedimentation tank isolation, and sludge feed lines; AWWA C504 and NSF/ANSI 61 certified for potable water
HVAC chilled water and heating water systems
Ductile Iron or Carbon Steel wafer butterfly valves on chiller and boiler plant connections, AHU bypass, and zone isolation; compact face-to-face saves space in congested plant rooms compared to gate valves
Cooling tower and condenser water
large-bore Ductile Iron wafer butterfly valves (12"–36") on cooling tower risers, condenser water supply/return, and cooling water pump discharge; EPDM seat handles treated cooling water chemistry
Fire protection systems
Ductile Iron wafer butterfly valves with indicator post or tamper switch for fire sprinkler zone isolation; UL/FM listed designs meet NFPA 13 requirements for water-based fire protection systems
General utilities
air, nitrogen, and non-critical process gas line isolation using Carbon Steel or SS316 wafer butterfly valves with PTFE seat; quarter-turn lever operation allows rapid manual isolation for maintenance
How to Choose the Right Wafer Type Butterfly Valve
Wafer butterfly valves are the correct choice for large-bore (6"+) on/off isolation in water, HVAC, and low-pressure utility service at PN6–PN16, where weight and cost savings versus gate valves are a priority. Do not use wafer style for dead-end service (pipeline termination) - the valve cannot hold back pressure without downstream flange support; use a lug-type butterfly valve instead. Select EPDM seat for water, steam, and dilute chemical service; PTFE for most chemicals; NBR for petroleum-based fluids; Viton for elevated temperatures up to 180°C.
