About the Foot Valve
The foot valve is a specialised check valve installed at the bottom of a pump suction pipe - submerged in a well, sump, pit, river, or water storage tank - whose primary function is to retain the water column (prime) in the suction pipe when the pump is stopped. Without a foot valve, the water in the suction pipe would drain back into the source by gravity each time the pump stops, causing the suction pipe to fill with air. The next time the pump starts, it would lose prime and either fail to pump or run dry and damage itself. The foot valve's spring-loaded or gravity-loaded disc holds the water column in place, ensuring the pump is always ready to start immediately without manual priming.
Foot valves are always combined with an integral strainer basket at the inlet to prevent debris, leaves, stones, and pipe scale from entering the suction line and damaging the pump impeller. The strainer screen area is typically 3–5 times the pipe bore area to ensure adequate flow even with partial blockage. Foot valves are available in Cast Iron, Bronze, Stainless Steel, and PVC body materials to serve potable water, irrigation, agricultural, and industrial dewatering applications. Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies foot valves in sizes 1/2" to 12" to BS 5153 with various strainer mesh options.
Where It's Used
Key industries and applications for the Foot Valve
Irrigation and agricultural pumping
Cast Iron or PVC foot valves on suction inlets of centrifugal irrigation pumps drawing from canals, reservoirs, or open sumps; integral strainer prevents weed, debris, and sediment ingestion; available in large bore up to 12" for high-flow agricultural pumps
Building water supply and pressure boosting
Bronze foot valves on submersible and end-suction pump suction inlets in building sump cisterns, underground water storage tanks, and overhead tank supply points; maintains prime and prevents pump dry-running
Construction site dewatering
robust Cast Iron or Ductile Iron foot valves on dewatering pump suction in temporary excavation pits, cofferdams, and building basements; heavy-duty strainer handles sandy/silty water
Industrial sump and condensate recovery
SS316 foot valves on condensate pit pump suction in power plants, steam-using process plants, and laundry/kitchen drain recovery systems; stainless construction resists corrosion in condensate
Borehole and submersible well pumps
compact Bronze or SS316 foot valves at the base of borehole pump suction column in water wells, geothermal boreholes, and industrial groundwater extraction; prevents drawdown column drain-back
How to Choose the Right Foot Valve
Foot valves are required whenever a centrifugal pump draws from an open sump, tank, or reservoir and the pump is positioned above the water surface - i.e., whenever the pump must maintain suction lift. For submersible pumps (pump below water level), a foot valve is not needed as the pump is always primed. Select body material to match the liquid: Bronze or SS316 for potable water; Cast Iron for non-potable water and irrigation; PVC for mildly corrosive water. Size the foot valve based on the pump suction pipe diameter, not the pump connection size.
