About the Spring Loaded Check Valve

The spring loaded check valve (also called a non-slam check valve) incorporates a compression spring behind the disc that pre-loads the disc toward the closed position. This spring loading means the disc begins closing as soon as forward flow velocity decreases - before flow reversal occurs - rather than waiting for the negative velocity force of reversing flow to push the disc shut as in a standard swing check. The result is that the disc arrives at the seat with nearly zero velocity (the spring has already decelerated it), producing a "soft" seat contact rather than a slamming impact. This virtually eliminates water hammer pressure transients on pump trip or compressor shutdown.

The spring loaded check valve also has the advantage of being position-independent: because the disc is spring-loaded toward the seat, the valve can be installed in any orientation - horizontal, vertical upward, vertical downward, or inclined - without risk of the disc hanging open by gravity in non-horizontal orientations. This multi-directional installation flexibility, combined with non-slam closure and compact face-to-face (wafer body versions are typically 1/3 the length of a flanged swing check), makes spring loaded check valves one of the most versatile check valve types available. Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies spring loaded check valves in wafer and flanged body styles in sizes 1/2" to 24" in Carbon Steel and Stainless Steel to API 594 and EN 12334.

Where It's Used

Key industries and applications for the Spring Loaded Check Valve

1

Pump protection in any pipe orientation

spring loaded check valves on pump discharge in vertical, inclined, and horizontal installations; eliminates the orientation constraint of swing checks; prevents reverse rotation of pumps on trip

2

Compressor anti-surge and discharge protection

SS316 spring loaded check valves on compressor discharge headers, anti-surge recycle lines, and gas lift injection; spring pre-load prevents disc flutter at pulsating flow conditions

3

HVAC and building services

compact wafer spring loaded check valves on chiller and boiler pump discharge, plate heat exchanger connections, and domestic hot water circulation pumps; can be installed in any position in congested plant rooms

4

Chemical injection and metering

SS316 or Hastelloy spring loaded check valves on chemical dosing pump outlet to prevent siphoning of chemicals back into the pump when the pump stops; Hastelloy spring for aggressive chemical compatibility

5

Water and wastewater treatment

Carbon Steel or SS316 spring loaded check valves on filter backwash pump discharge, raw water pump outlet, and sludge dewatering pump discharge; non-slam operation protects valves and instruments from water hammer

How to Choose the Right Spring Loaded Check Valve

Specify spring loaded check valves when: (a) the installation orientation is not horizontal and a swing check cannot be used; (b) water hammer on pump trip is a concern and a non-slam design is required; (c) the pipe size is too small for a dual plate check valve (below 2") or the fluid is too viscous for dual plate closure; or (d) the flow is pulsating (metering pumps, compressors) and the spring stiffness can be selected to prevent disc flutter. Select spring constant to suit the system - a stiffer spring improves non-slam performance but increases cracking pressure and pressure drop.
