About the Dual Plate Check Valve
The dual plate check valve - also known as double door check valve - is a compact, wafer-style non-return valve that uses two spring-loaded semicircular plates hinged on a central horizontal pin to prevent reverse flow. Unlike swing check valves where the disc must travel through a wide arc before closing, the dual plate check's plates only need to rotate 90 degrees from full-open to closed - a much faster closure stroke that dramatically reduces the water hammer transient on pump trip or compressor shutdown.
The spring loading in the dual plate check valve means the plates begin closing before flow reversal occurs - at zero velocity - rather than waiting for reverse flow to push them shut. This non-slam behaviour eliminates the pressure spike (water hammer) that damages pumps, pipelines, heat exchangers, and instrumentation. The wafer face-to-face dimension is typically 1/3 to 1/5 that of a comparable swing check, making dual plate checks the preferred choice wherever space or weight is a concern: offshore platforms, compressor stations, high-rise buildings, and FPSO vessels.
Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies dual plate check valves in 2" to 48" in body materials of Carbon Steel (WCB), Stainless Steel (CF8M), Duplex, and Super Duplex, with disc and spring materials to match. Pressure classes PN10 to PN40 (Class 150 to 600) are stocked in common sizes. All valves meet API 594 and API 6D.
Where It's Used
Key industries and applications for the Dual Plate Check Valve
Pump discharge headers
dual plate check valves sized for full pump flow velocity (2–4 m/s) prevent reverse rotation and water hammer on sudden pump trip; preferred over swing checks in multi-pump stations for faster closure
Compressor discharge lines
SS316 dual plate check valves with Inconel springs rated for high-cycle service in gas compression trains where pressure reversals occur frequently at start/stop
High-rise building and district cooling systems
compact wafer face-to-face dimensions make dual plate checks the preferred choice in plant rooms, risers, and congested mechanical cores
Offshore FPSOs and platforms
weight-critical applications benefit from the short face-to-face; Duplex 2205 construction for sour gas and seawater injection service with NACE MR0175
Pipeline and process headers
horizontal or vertical upward flow installation; provides reliable non-return service in oil, gas, water, and chemical pipeline systems
How to Choose the Right Dual Plate Check Valve
Select a dual plate check valve for pump or compressor discharge applications where water hammer risk is present, where space between flanges is limited, or where the piping system includes vertical upward flow segments. Size the valve based on actual flow velocity - not pipe bore - targeting 2–4 m/s through the valve. Avoid dual plate check valves on vertical downward flow; use a spring-assisted lift check or tilting disc check instead.
