About the Swing Check Valve
The swing check valve is the most widely used non-return valve type in global industrial and municipal piping, valued for its simplicity, reliability, and low pressure drop in fully open position. The disc is hinged at the top of the body on a hinge pin and swings freely through an arc from the fully open (disc parallel to flow, pivoted back against the valve body) to the fully closed position (disc perpendicular to the seat face, blocking reverse flow). With no springs or external mechanisms, the swing check is extremely simple - only two moving parts (the disc and the hinge pin) - making it highly reliable in clean, non-pulsating flow service.
The main limitation of the swing check valve is its closure behaviour: the disc does not begin to close until the forward flow velocity drops to near-zero and then reverses direction momentarily. This means that on pump trip, the disc can swing through a large arc and impact the seat at high velocity - generating a loud "slam" and a water hammer pressure wave that can damage the valve, adjacent piping, and instrumentation. In applications where water hammer is a concern, spring-assisted or weighted-disc swing check valves, or dual plate check valves, are preferred. Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies swing check valves from 1/2" to 36" in Cast Iron, Ductile Iron, Carbon Steel WCB, and SS316 to API 6D, BS 1868, and API 594.
Where It's Used
Key industries and applications for the Swing Check Valve
Pump discharge
Cast Iron or Carbon Steel swing check valves on pump discharge in municipal water supply, irrigation pumping stations, and HVAC chiller plants; horizontal installation ensures gravity assists disc closure; resilient EPDM seat for water systems
Backflow prevention in water distribution
Ductile Iron swing check valves in potable water main connections, service entries, and hydrant feeds; WRAS-approved EPDM seat for drinking water compliance; tamper-resistant design for public infrastructure
Gravity drainage and sewer systems
large-bore Cast Iron swing check valves (12"–36") on stormwater drainage outfalls and sewage rising main terminals to prevent backflow during flood events; low cracking pressure critical for gravity-flow applications
Oil and gas production
Carbon Steel or SS316 swing check valves on wellhead production manifolds, test separator returns, and produced water reinjection; Stellite-faced seat and disc for erosive service with sand-laden crude
Chemical and industrial process lines
SS316 swing check valves on chemical make-up pump discharge, metering pump outlet, and process liquid transfers; full metal-to-metal seat for high-temperature service above 200°C where elastomers fail
How to Choose the Right Swing Check Valve
Swing check valves are the correct choice for horizontal or vertical upward pipe runs with steady, non-pulsating flow where water hammer on pump trip is not a critical concern. Do not install swing check valves in vertical downward flow - gravity prevents disc closure, allowing uncontrolled back-flow. For pump discharge with water hammer risk, use a dual plate check valve or spring-assisted swing check with controlled closure rate. Size the swing check so the forward flow velocity through the valve is at least 0.6 m/s to ensure the disc swings fully open and does not flutter at the hinge.
