About the Lift Check Valve
The lift check valve operates on a disc (piston) or ball that lifts vertically off a seat when forward flow pressure exceeds the cracking pressure, and drops back onto the seat under gravity or spring force when flow stops or reverses. Unlike the swing check with its wide swinging arc, the piston disc travels in a precisely guided straight vertical path - eliminating the momentum slam of a swinging disc and providing more controlled closure with minimal water hammer. The guided piston design is inherently well-suited to high-pressure service where a heavy piston sitting firmly on a precision-machined metal seat provides reliable bubble-tight shut-off.
Two disc configurations are common: piston type - a precision-machined cylindrical piston guided by the body bore, used in most horizontal and vertical upward-flow installations; and ball type - a spherical ball that rolls on the seat, used in small-bore sizes for vertical upward flow in instrumentation and metering pump discharge applications. Both can operate in horizontal or vertical upward pipe runs. For vertical upward flow, the lift check is often superior to a swing check because the disc closes straight down by gravity rather than needing to swing through an arc. Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies lift check valves in sizes 1/2" to 12" in Carbon Steel, SS316, and Bronze to API 602 and BS 5352 with Stellite hard-faced seats for steam and high-temperature service.
Where It's Used
Key industries and applications for the Lift Check Valve
High-pressure steam systems
Class 600–900 WCB or WC6 piston lift check valves on HP steam service, turbine exhaust bypass, and steam seal header; metal-to-metal Stellite seat and disc for tight shut-off at high temperature and pressure
Metering and chemical dosing pumps
small-bore SS316 ball-type lift check valves on reciprocating metering pump suction and discharge; ball design accommodates the pulsating flow from positive displacement pumps without flutter
Vertical upward flow pipe runs
lift check valves on vertical risers in chemical dosing, reagent transfer, and condensate recovery systems where swing checks cannot operate reliably due to disc hanging open by gravity in downward flow
Boiler feed water and condensate return
Carbon Steel or SS316 piston lift check valves on boiler feed pump discharge, deaerator outlet, and condensate return pump headers; Class 300–600 for elevated temperatures to 350°C
High-pressure instrumentation and gas lines
small-bore (1/4"–2") SS316 or Monel piston lift check valves on instrument gas supply, purge meter connections, and high-pressure seal gas lines in compressor stations
How to Choose the Right Lift Check Valve
Lift check valves are the preferred choice for: (a) high-pressure service where a heavy guided piston provides reliable metal-to-metal shut-off; (b) vertical upward flow orientations where gravity closes the piston reliably; (c) metering pump service where the pulsating flow pattern requires a ball-type design that can handle fast opening and closing cycles without flutter; or (d) small-bore (below 3") applications where the compact body length is advantageous. For large-bore horizontal service with steady pump discharge flow, dual plate or swing check valves are more economical.
